Utah’s historic fire season of 2026

Early last month, Utah experienced two historic wildfires at the same time, highlighting the record-setting fire season continuing to unfold in the Beehive State. While 2026 has not yet surpassed the 2007 record for number of acres burned, this year’s fires have so far consumed an unprecedented area of Utah’s trees compared to past years. Flames have blackened a record 285,000 acres of woodlands and forest, according to analysis by University of Utah geographers.

Data centers may be becoming the thing everybody loves to hate, but they support the foundations of the Internet economy, touching all our lives for better or worse. The digital cloud doesn’t exist in the clouds. It lives in thousands of nondescript buildings scattered around the world, consuming vast amounts of electrical power and water. The AI revolution promises to drive further proliferation of data centers.

“I’m originally from Massachusetts. When I was an undergrad at Stonehill College, I did behavioral ecology research with guppies and studied the impacts of anthropogenic light pollution on darkling beetles. In my two gap years, I switched gears and went to work in a cancer lab. But for graduate school, I knew I wanted to do more climate change research and that I wanted to move out West. Doctoral candidate Lauren Whelton shows off her tattoos of organisms she has studied.
