Interview

How is social media changing news?

Social media has forced journalists to go beyond the printed page and the broadcast package and become embedded in the interconnected conversation happening around their beats. Thanks to social media tools, journalists are able to do research, share their work and get feedback -- all in real time. The process has become more immediate and more collaborative.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

...the Hunter S. Thompson who exists in peoples' imaginations.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

A journalist combines critical thinking, research skills and the ability to tell a story in a compelling way to serve the public interest.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

I like a succinct email without lots of puffery or gush. Just get to the point...

What's your favorite social network?

I like Twitter the best because it gives a fascinating look at the way public attention crests and falls like waves crashing on the shore.

Why did you become a journalist?

My dad had a long career in journalism, and for as long as I can remember, I was excited by the way journalists got to be part of big events.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

The only way to break the big stories is to pay attention to the small stories. Find your beat and cover it methodically. Listen.
