The namesake peak of the Eagle Cap Wilderness. Volcanoes? Who needs them. This Eastern Oregon range, sitting outside the dramatic Ring of Fire and consisting mostly of metamorphic rocks and granite, are geologically closer to the Alps than to the Cascades. No wonder you’ll encounter so many references to Switzerland in and near the Eagle Cap Wilderness, down to its second-tallest peak, Matterhorn. The tallest? Sacajawea Peak, right next door.
