Interview

How is social media changing news?

It has made the job of journalists significantly harder because everyone now thinks they are a reporter, often sharing unverified information as news. As a result, news consumption has changed because people expect information instantaneously and have little patience for the reporting process. This has also led to audiences accusing legitimate media outlets of being slow to publish, when in reality we are taking the necessary time to do our due diligence by confirming and verifying facts before releasing information.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

Being a journalist means staying curious, working hard, and trying to help people. You look for information, make sure it’s right, and explain it in a way that helps folks understand what’s going on in their world.

Why did you become a journalist?

I grew up as the child of Cambodian immigrants, and I met a lot of people whose lives looked a lot like my family’s, yet each of them had their own unique story. That’s really where my curiosity started. Whenever I learned something new or heard someone’s story, I loved sharing it with others. I wanted people to feel inspired or to learn something they might not have known before. That feeling is what pushed me toward journalism.
