Wide-swath altimetry maps bank shapes and storage changes in global rivers
Abstract Rivers are Earth’s most renewable and accessible freshwater resource1, yet global estimates of the magnitude and variability in river water storage have remained few and inconsistent1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9. Previous estimates of variability have relied either on sparse and asynchronous remote-sensing observations10 or on hydrological models constrained by incomplete understanding of surface-water balance and poorly known river channel characteristics2,3.

Effect of Exact Exchange on the Energy Landscape in Self-Consistent Field Theory
1. Introduction Click to copy section linkSection link copied! Symmetry breaking is ubiquitous in electronic self-consistent field (SCF) approximations. (1−5) The true wave function of an isolated molecule conserves all physical symmetries of the Hamiltonian, including particle number, complex conjugation, the Ŝ2 and Ŝz spin quantum numbers S and MS, and the spatial point group symmetry.
A Molecular View into the Structure and Dynamics of Phase-Separated Chromatin
Introduction Click to copy section linkSection link copied! Eukaryotic DNA must become highly compacted to fit within the confined space of the nucleus yet simultaneously organized to correctly facilitate gene expression. To meet these requirements, eukaryotic DNA complexes with histone octamers to form chromatin: a hierarchically compacted material which exhibits a heterogeneous and dynamic organization.

State-Specific Coupled-Cluster Methods for Excited States
Over the past few years, significant advances have been made toward the accurate description of molecular excited states, with a particular emphasis on vertical excitation energies from the electronic ground state. These advances have been realized by solving the Schrödinger equation in the basis of many-electron functions using a set of judicious and appropriate approximations.
Variational Pair-Density Functional Theory: Dealing with Strong Correlation at the Protein Scale
Density functional theory (DFT) is currently by far the most widely used method to compute the electronic structure of molecular systems, due in no small part to its high accuracy to cost ratio, scaling formally lower than Hartree–Fock (HF). (1,2) While technically an exact formalism, in practice, DFT relies on approximations of the universal exchange–correlation functional.
Coupled-Cluster Density-Based Many-Body Expansion
Special Issue Published as part of The Journal of Physical Chemistry A virtual special issue “Krishnan Raghavachari Festschrift”. Coupled cluster methods (1) allow for the quantum-chemical treatment of molecular systems with high accuracy. In particular, the CCSD(T) model (2) in combination with sufficiently large basis sets is often considered the “gold standard” of computational chemistry, as it mostly provides outstanding accuracy at a relatively moderate computational cost.

Directional Sensors for Recording Uterine EMG During Pregnancy - Reproductive Sciences
Abstract Multichannel uterine electromyography (uEMG) during pregnancy is traditionally performed with electrocardiography (ECG) sensors. Similar signals are often observed in two or more channels, suggesting the ECG sensors report activities originating from the same location on the uterus. To improve signal source localization, we designed a directional sensor or “Area Sensor”. Here we compare Area Sensors with ECG sensors for source localization.

[2304.14302] In-memory photonic dot-product engine with electrically programmable weight banks
Electronically reprogrammable photonic circuits based on phase-change chalcogenides present an avenue to resolve the von-Neumann bottleneck; however, implementation of such hybrid photonic-electronic processing has not achieved computational success. Here, we achieve this milestone by demonstrating an in-memory photonic-electronic dot-product engine, one that decouples electronic programming of phase-change materials (PCMs) and photonic computation.

A Regularized Second-Order Correlation Method from Green’s Function Theory
We present a scalable single-particle framework to treat electronic correlation in molecules and materials motivated by Green’s function theory. We derive a size-extensive Brillouin-Wigner perturbation theory from the single-particle Green’s function by introducing the Goldstone self-energy.

Regulation of B cell receptor signalling by Epstein-Barr virus nuclear antigens
To determine whether the repressive effect of EBNA2 on EBF-1 activation of the CD79B promoter was dependent on RBP-J, we repeated the luciferase reporter assays in a DG75 RBP-J (CBF-1) knock-out cell line. We observed an increase in transcriptional activation by EBF-1 in RBP-J KO cells (14-fold compared with 8-fold), consistent with RBP-J acting as a repressor of CD79B transcription through inhibition of EBF-1 DNA binding [52] (Figure 5B,C).
Neurodevelopmental outcomes of very preterm infants who received cord milking at birth: a randomized controlled trial - European Journal of Pediatrics
Abstract Umbilical cord milking improves postnatal adaptation and short-term outcomes of very preterm infants compared to early cord clamping. Little is known about the impact of umbilical cord milking on long-term neurodevelopmental outcomes. The objective of this study is to compare the effects of intact umbilical cord milking (UCM) vs. early cord clamping (ECC) at birth on neurodevelopmental outcomes at 36 months’ corrected age.

IMPROVED OUTCOMES FOLLOWING REIMPLANTATION OF THE AORTIC VALVE COMPARED TO REMODELING IN MARFAN SYNDROME: A PROPENSITY-MATCHED STUDY
Aortic Valve Sparing operations (AVS) have excellent outcomes in patients with Marfan syndrome when performed in experienced centres. While long-term results are known depend on patient selection and surgical technique, data comparing reimplantation and remodelling techniques are limited. We therefore sought to compare the late outcomes of patients with Marfan syndrome undergoing reimplantation of the aortic valve to those undergoing a remodeling procedure.

Small details you missed in Shazam!

Towards X-ray transient grating spectroscopy
Abstract The extension of transient grating spectroscopy to the x-ray regime will create numerous opportunities, ranging from the study of thermal transport in the ballistic regime to charge, spin, and energy transfer processes with atomic spatial and femtosecond temporal resolution. Studies involving complicated split-and-delay lines have not yet been successful in achieving this goal.
Biggest unanswered questions in Aquaman
The DCEU gets deeper, both literally and figuratively, with the theatrical release of Aquaman, a two-hour-plus plunge into the murky abyss teeming with undersea politics, reluctant beefcake princes, wet and wild superpowers, and magical artifacts. What's left to take away after the Atlantean prince's rise to power and journey of self-discovery? Well, a whole lot of questions, not the least of which is how they taught an octopus to drum.
Easter eggs you missed in Venom
Sony's Spider-verse is growing fast, and part of that expanding family is a little movie about a highly impressionable pile of alien goo who finds a humanoid buddy and changes his life, for better or worse. And no, it's not the movie version of the NES classic A Boy and His Blob. Though that title would have worked too. While critical response to Venom has been uneven, the action-packed film was pulled straight from the pages of Marvel's most gloriously 1990s comic books, wonderful warts and all.
Nonvolatile Reconfigurable Phase-Change Metadevices for Beam Steering in the Near Infrared
The development of flat, compact beam-steering devices with no bulky moving parts is opening up a new route to a variety of exciting applications, such as LIDAR scanning systems for autonomous vehicles, robotics and sensing, free-space, and even surface wave optical signal coupling.
