On an unseasonably hot March day in Venice Beach, California, beachgoers sought refuge from the sun under bright umbrellas. Morgan Goodwin, executive director of the Planetary Sunshade Institute, thinks that maybe we could cool the earth the same way. “If we're too hot out here and we want a little bit less sunlight, we can put up the shade, block some of the sun and cool us off,” he said.

Could releasing sulfur dioxide into the atmosphere cool the planet?

The planet is rapidly warming. Even if we manage to stop emitting fossil fuels, the carbon dioxide already in the atmosphere will continue to keep temperatures high. Scientists say there is something that could help: If we were to release sulfur dioxide into the stratosphere, the particles would reflect sunlight away from the earth — and cool the planet. This is a solar geoengineering intervention known as stratospheric aerosol injection, and it’s controversial.
