There’s a lot of money — and walking — in the elk antler market

Every spring, elk naturally shed their antlers, which can weigh as much as 40 pounds. People then pick them up and sell them. Kids from the local Cub Scouts carry out elk antlers to be auctioned off. It is a big business year-round. But the market particularly shines in the spring in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. On a recent Saturday the town square, which is flanked with permanent elk antler arches, was buzzing. It was the world’s largest annual auction for elk antlers.

A mild winter gave Mountain West construction workers an early start

During an icy, cold winter, construction is pretty limited. But in the Mountain West, construction jobs are seeing an early boost thanks to an unusually mild winter. “You can't lay asphalt in temperatures that are below, I think, 45 degrees — like, it doesn't work,” said Jodie Green, who’s in Flathead Valley, Montana, with Schellinger Construction. When their road contracts started this spring, full work crews hit the ground paving.

Wyoming's uranium mining industry is making a comeback

Jeffrey City, Wyoming, is a famous boom — and bust — town that rose to prominence during the heights of uranium mining in the U.S. One of the nation’s largest uranium companies, Uranium Energy Corporation, reports earnings on Wednesday. This comes as the uranium industry is seeing a boost in production.
