Why Are Avid Book Readers Reading Less?
Americans reported to Gallup they read on average 12.6 books during 2021. This is the smallest number since Gallup began measuring in 1990. The most concerning drop came from college graduates, who comprise the avid-reader cluster for books. When avid customers in any product category start consuming less, that is worrisome. Per Gallup: “The decline is greater among subgroups that tended to be more avid readers, particularly college graduates but also women and older Americans.

Young Again Excerpt
Opening Pages: Friday She gazes out from the stage relieved this will be her final performance. Everything in front of her slows; it’s as if she’s a bystander in a Renoir painting, both present and absent, the people at their tables rendered so well they seem to be in motion. The faces in this crowd are not all that different from what she remembers back in her day, except they are far more diverse.

Mother Tongue Excerpt - Publerati
My name is Nella Pine and this is my life’s story, as new to me as it will be to you who reads it here for the first time. I am the secret and the one who whispers the secret into your ear. I am the crime and the narrator-sleuth. I came upon the facts of my existence as one who returns to her home in the midst of a burglary: here is the shattered glass, the rifled drawers, the thief with the booty still cradled in her guilty arms.
When Dead Writers Speak . . .
When dead writers speak . . . at a recent estate sale, I came upon the book A Reader for Writers: Confidential Talk about Authorship by 27 Writers, edited by William Targ and published in 1951. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in becoming a novelist or publisher, as it is filled with wisdom best provided through the words of writers themselves, such as this from Anthony Trollope: “When I had been married a year my first novel was finished.
Compass by Murray Lee
We can’t all be heroes. Some try and succeed. Others posture and pretend. And a few—just a few—set off on their hero’s quest only to discover that failure was within them all along. Compass recounts the adventures of a man who, after traveling the world shilling stories for a major geographic magazine about historic expeditions and explorers, sets out on an adventure of his own—an ill-advised and poorly planned trip to the Arctic floe edge under the disorienting twenty-four-hour summer sun.

Authors Need Publishers Less than Ever
Let me preface this by saying I run a literary fiction micro-publisher operating much in the mold of how full-service traditional publishing has for years, although because my overheads are so low, I pay my authors 50% of print and 70% of ebook royalties, something I realize large publishers cannot do. As self-publishing continues evolving, it strikes me that traditional publishers are losing one of our most important services for authors: bookstore distribution.
Clock no longer works..
Clock no longer works.. My cassette went out in my FC 91 Vert. I decided it was time to upgrade to a new stereo and picked up a double DIN pioneer stereo. After a long night of wiring diagrams, I finally got it to go through. I started driving home, and the stereo, or some wires made love behind the stereo, and I blew my gauge cluster fuse. I replaced the gauge cluster fuse, but Im still having issues with the clock. The clock is the only thing not working.

Did Ford Tell the Truth? The Committee Can Find Out
I’m a trial lawyer. I used to be a federal prosecutor, and now I do civil litigation and criminal defense. I spend my time trying to use the investigative and fact-finding tools of the legal system to resolve problems for people and companies that get in disputes. Every one of those disputes involves contested versions of particular events that happened years in the past.
On Criminal Justice, Kavanaugh May Be More Centrist than Kennedy | The Crime Report
Many commentators have asserted that Brett Kavanaugh will “move the Supreme Court to the right,” if his nomination is approved, because he is more conservative than retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy, according to standard political science metrics. These metrics are a prized tool of political science professors. There’s a whole poli-sci industry devoted to coding appellate judges’ votes as “right” or “left” to try to quantify judges’ ideologies.
Why are Publishers Happy About Missing Out on the Digital Revolution?
The chart you see above is from Gallup and Pew measuring the percentage of adults in the U.S. who have not read a single book in the year measured. It was 8% in 1978 and has been hovering at 23-27% in recent years. This is not a trend one associates with a growth industry. Meanwhile, I see newspaper editors, authors, and book publishers celebrating the death of the ebook without looking at this long-term trend of reading decline. Are they dancing on their own graves?
Can Steve Bannon claim executive privilege? Absolutely not
Stephen K. Bannon appeared recently before the House Intelligence Committee but refused to answer numerous questions, claiming executive privilege. Can he do that? The lawyer’s answer is no. This administration will find no more refuge in claims of executive privilege than the Nixon administration did in the summer of 1974.Last summer, I wrote about Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ executive privilege claims during his congressional testimony regarding the president’s firing of FBI Director James B.

What Does the Future Hold for Small-Batch Publishing?
One of the great backlashes in our era of conglomerates is the steady growth of small-batch businesses. These are very small businesses that cater mostly to customers willing to spend more for a seemingly better and more controlled product offering. There are many happy consumers who will buy a four-pack of local brew for $16, which when you think about it, is only $4 for a very good can of beer. Compare that to the bar.
Sessions just can’t shut up
I’ve spent much of the last decade prosecuting or defending people charged with all manner of crimes. And it has always amazed me how often people talk themselves into trouble by trying to talk themselves out of it. Attorney General Jeff Sessions is a good example. Like a lot of my clients, he talked himself into trouble, then tried to talk himself out of it and could never bring himself to just shut up.Sessions’ trouble started at his confirmation hearing in January, when Sen.

pH regulation in early endosomes and interferon-inducible transmembrane proteins control avian retrovirus fusion
Enveloped viruses infect host cells by fusing their membranes with those of the host cell, a process mediated by viral glycoproteins upon binding to cognate host receptors or entering into acidic intracellular compartments. Whereas the effect of receptor density on viral infection has been well studied, the role of cell type-specific factors/processes, such as pH regulation, has not been characterized in sufficient detail.
Why Did South Carolina Punt on the Slager Case?
The announcement last week of a “global plea agreement” in which Michael Slager resolved both his federal and state criminal prosecutions was surprising. Readers may recall that Slager is the former North Charleston police officer who was caught on video killing a 50-year-old man named Walter Scott on April 4, 2015. Slager is white; Scott was black. Scott was unarmed and his crime was that one of the brake lights on his car was out. He ran away when Slager pulled him over.
Alas, Why? - The Problem With Big Publishing Rejection Letters
One would think well-educated, literate people, such as those who are attracted to and working in book publishing, would be able to write a rejection letter without using the dreaded “alas” word. But it’s always there, in letters written by veterans and rookies alike. I’d like to suggest we break the pattern and either use form rejection letters that say nothing or try and write a meaningful response to those writers slaving over every word on their pages.

Will Gorsuch Be Another Scalia on Criminal Justice Issues? Not Likely
Last night, the President nominated Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court. What’s the outlook for criminal-justice jurisprudence from the new Supreme Court, with Gorsuch filling the late Justice Antonin Scalia’s seat? It’s an interesting question, because, as I’ve written here before, Justice Scalia was genuinely idiosyncratic when it came to criminal cases. And the short answer is that Gorsuch won’t be another Scalia on criminal law, because no one can be.

Benefits of Mobile Reading on the iPhone 7
I upgraded to the Apple iPhone 7 for Christmas and have already doubled my reading time. And most of that doubling is because my reading is now truly mobile. Let me offer some personal examples. My wife likes to shop. A lot. I do not. While she was shopping at Goodwill last week, I read Justine by Lawrence Durrell on my iPhone for an hour while sitting in the car. If you’ve read Durrell, you know he liked to throw around a lot of arcane words. I was looking up words every third sentence on my iPhone.
