I have an innate sense of curiosity and a compulsion to actually listen to what people say. I'm not just waiting for my turn to talk.

Why did you become a journalist?

To tell the stories that need to be known.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

Nope.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

Stories in Afghanistan when I was embedded with troops, particularly in Panjshir.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Be willing to put in the time and dig a little deeper. Sometimes the real story isn't apparent. You have to ask the right questions.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Afternoon or early evening.

Here's a story about a country music star's wife and how she and her sister overcame personal adversity and give back ...

Write about a vortex in the Birmingham Public Library. Really?

Depends when and where.

I don't stick to one particular beat, but that doesn't mean I can't do many things well.
