I don’t know about you but there have certainly been cruises in my experience that have surprised me. You know, like the Windstar voyage a year ago in Tahiti in which a set-up of three cyclones unexpectedly manuevered us on the path to the otherwise undiscovered Marquesas Islands (still one of the most amazing trips of my life). It was an outlier cruise, for sure.

At the end of one year and the beginning of the next there’s always a lot of coverage in the media about travel trends. And of course they’re often focused on destinations. In one list of “hot” destinations, Forbes Travel Guide tells us that big events like the Formula 1 race in Monaco makes its list of top destinations (we’re ahead of Forbes on that one, see why). Greece’s Athens Riviera, just ten miles south of Athens (and a perfect pre- or post-Greek Isles stay) makes the cut.

When Windstar announced last fall that it would be extending its Mediterranean season to year-round (from spring/summer/autumn), the first thing I wondered was this: How would a cruise in November–early March be different from one during the traditional April–October time frame? How would the new timings materially change the experience? What I learned, after my recent cruise around the Mediterranean, was that it was equally enjoyable but different. How so?
