Maria Farmer was the first victim of Jeffrey Epstein to go to the FBI. In 1996. They ignored her. In 2002, Farmer did an interview with Vicki Ward of Vanity Fair, alleging that both she and her sister, Annie, on separate occasions, had been assaulted by Epstein. The interview was spiked from the story by editor Graydon Carter. “It came down to my sources’ word against Epstein’s,” Ward wrote in the Daily Beast in 2015.

I first noticed it with Nancie. Nancie was a woman who ran a business that I contracted with to mail PerformInk to subscribers. For a time, I would see her every two weeks, without fail, as I delivered papers to her office. Nancie was funny, kinda raunchy, smart but not educated. She had been dealing with the post office for years, and I relied on her expertise.

Back in 2016, I took my recorder and mic to a parking lot outside of a grocery store in Las Vegas. I was gathering answers to a question NPR was posing to listeners - and asking member stations to record. The question was about anxiety in the voting public. Talk about an understatement. I talked to a man, Nicholas, from Iran who was an engineer. He came to this country at the age of 15 during the revolution. Which means, when I was talking to him in 2016, he was in his 50s.
