May is Mental Health Awareness Month and the woman leading Arizona’s largest mental health organization is using it as an opportunity to share a story she knows better than anyone: her own. Laqwanda Roberts-Buckley is the Executive Director of NAMI Arizona, the state’s chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness.

Foundation provides fishing opportunities for children with special needs

LAKE PLEASANT, AZ (AZFamily) — Families seeking activities that are both fun and accessible for children with special needs can face challenges. One foundation is working to change that by offering fishing experiences on Lake Pleasant. Brandon, 13, was born with special needs. He always wants to catch fish. The foundation provides him and other children the chance to be regular kids enjoying a day on the lake. “It’s about the experience and the reward you get,” Brandon said.

Meet the first Black head coach in ASU women’s tennis history

TEMPE, AZ (AZFamily) — Jamea Jackson, a former professional tennis player who reached a career-high world ranking of No. 43, was named head coach of the Arizona State University women’s tennis program in 2024, becoming the first African American coach in the program’s history. Jackson grew up in Atlanta and said one of her earliest memories is on a tennis court. “One of my first memories is on a tennis court — okay, it was on the dirt beside a tennis court,” Jackson said.
