STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Friday marks Juneteenth, a federal holiday observed on June 19 each year. It observes the day in 1865 when the last enslaved African Americans in Texas were freed, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. The day, which was declared a federal holiday in 2021, is often filled with festivities, parades, and moments of commemoration. Many retailers are open, including Costco, BJ’s, Target, Best Buy, and Home Depot.
