Power on Dylan, or: The Power of Dylan
By 1966, Bob Dylan and his apostolic audience were at odds and that tension boiled to a head during one pivotal set at Manchester Free Trade Hall, not the misbilled Royal Albert Hall. In 2022, Cat Power brought Dylan’s words back home, this time in the right venue. Power, the notorious alternative folk songstress of ’90s acclaim, while known for being obtuse and inaccessible, feels remarkably accessible in this recording.

10 Movie Scenes That Completely Changed The Meaning Of Great Songs #finsubito #adessonews
Movies have the power to change the meaning of a song by using it in a contrasting way, forever associating it with a specific scene. Familiar songs in movie soundtracks can have a bigger impact on audiences due to their pre-established familiarity and emotional connection. Movies can shift the general perspective of music in the public zeitgeist by using songs in unexpected and powerful ways that resonate with the themes of the film.
Cat Power: Covers
A A A For the third time, singer Chan Marshall (a.k.a. Cat Power) lends her gift as a song interpreter to a collection of covers drenched in delay and vocal overdubs. This outing ranges from Frank Ocean (“Bad Religion”) and the Replacements (“Here Comes a Regular”) to Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds (“I Had a Dream, Joe”) and Lana Del Rey (“White Mustang”). Toss in the Pogues (“A Pair of Brown Eyes”), Billie Holiday (“I’ll Be Seeing You”) and Bob Seger (“Against the Wind”), and you get an eclectic mix.

'MutterERT' By Chuck D (Featuring Jahi)
The following was originally published at Ongoing History Of Protest Songs. When studying the history of socially conscious hip-hop very few have had the impact of Chuck D. As the MC of Public Enemy, he contributed several albums and songs that make up the canon of essential protest music. And, with rap-rock supergroup Prophets of Rage and as a solo artist, he is still going strong with his brand of political rap.

They published a report on the “wide powers” claimed by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents.

Deconstructing Flaws In Important New Report On Solitary
A new report on solitary confinement provides access to important data on the number of people in some form of solitary confinement in the United States. However, because the United States prison system is not one body but a collection of fiefdoms that set their own administrative rules and definitions, the data does not fully capture the reality of solitary confinement in the country.

The DOJ rounded up the cast and crew from Backpage and threw a 93-count indictment at them. It did this prior to FOSTA’s passage — legislation portrayed as the only way the government could take sites like Backpage down. History is being rewritten to give FOSTA the credit for the Backpage takedown, but the truth is the government didn’t need the legislation to target the site.

'In Your Face' By Cat Power
Chan Marshall, better known by the stage name Cat Power, gave birth to her son in April 2015 around the same time that protests were unfolding in response to Baltimore police who killed Freddie Gray. She immediately grappled with a world seemingly thrown into complete and utter chaos, and that continued into 2016 and beyond—particularly since there are so many politicians, who care so little about the well-being of women, running the government.
Cat Power 'Wanderer' Review
Chan Marshall has asserted herself over the years as a singer that can always deliver heartbreaking vocals and let her music enhance this experience even further. Though her arrangements on Wanderer are often so simple that you’ll focus in on her instead, that rarely works against any of the songs. With an emotional honesty that even sinks into her covers, Cat Power delivers a heavy if occasionally tonally stagnant album.
'Paranoid Core' By Mudhoney
When looking at the historical developments of grunge and the alternative rock explosion of the 1990s, it is hard to deny the impact Mudhoney played in helping to draw the blueprints that more commercially successful bands have followed. Mudhoney is currently celebrating their thirtieth anniversary and have recently released their tenth full-length album, “Digital Garbage.” From time to time, Mudhoney has explored political subjects.
Cat Power - Wanderer - Soundblab
Chan Marshall is one of the greatest singer-songwriters of the last 30 years, without question. She’s navigated multiple genres, and while every release hasn’t been spectacular – her covers albums are hit or miss – she always brings a certain degree of comfort when she releases new material. Six years removed from her underrated electro-pop opus Sun from 2012, Marshall returns with a prime slice of Americana that finds her in a more stripped-down atmosphere, hearkening back to her Moon Pix days.

Ohmme - Parts - Albums - Reviews - Soundblab
If you find yourself giving Ohmme’s debut album Parts a listen today, the first 3 minutes may be one of the most deceiving album intros of the 21st century, so be sure to keep going after. “Icon” starts Parts off with a bright, electric-folk style jaunt with dual harmonies from both Sima Cunningham and Macie Stewart, that recalls Bitte Orca style layering. You assume from this that Parts will just be another indie rock album that caters to a specific crowd, and likely dismiss it.

Phantastic Ferniture - Phantastic Ferniture - Soundblab
Maybe it’s the sweltering heat that drives folks indoors to pick out songs on their guitars, but for some reason my native Texas and Australia seem to crank out an endless supply of top notch songwriters. Lately Australia has had a bumper crop of particularly talented, and primarily women, songwriters. Julia Jacklin certainly stood out a few years back with her subtly layered debut LP, Don’t Let the Kids Win.
