Catelin Drey is a Democrat who represents northern Woodbury County in the Iowa Senate. I recently stood on the Iowa Senate floor and shared something deeply personal: I have stage one uterine cancer. I’ll undergo surgery, and like many patients, I won’t know the full course of treatment until pathology comes back. That part is private. What comes next shouldn’t be. We like to tell ourselves that health is about personal responsibility — eat right, exercise, get your checkups, and you’ll be fine.
