Prevalence of Potential Contraindications and Risk Factors Relevant to MDMA-Assisted Therapy Among U.S. Veterans with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder
ABSTRACT 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA)-assisted therapy has emerged as a potential strategy to treat posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). We conducted a national serial cross-sectional study of U.S. Veterans with PTSD from January 1, 2018, to December 31, 2023, to quantify the prevalence of potential contraindications, risk factors, and drug-drug interactions relevant to MDMA-assisted therapy.

Rethinking Regulatory Protections for Accelerated Approvals With Supplementary Indications
1 In 1992, accelerated approval was added to federal regulations, but eligibility was restricted to medications intended to treat serious or life-threatening conditions (1 Currently, approximately one-third of all oncology medication approvals are granted through the accelerated approval pathway.2 Before the early 1990s, traditional approval was the only regulatory pathway for new medications to enter the market in the United States.

After my breast cancer diagnosis, my practice became a lab for change
When I met the patient in my clinic, she was accompanied by her daughter and husband, who both looked completely frustrated with her. I went through my standard spiel about the necessity of radiation after a lumpectomy or a complete mastectomy to give her the best possible shot at local control."I know what the recommendations are. But I'll continue to roll the dice.
Beyond the Cure
Beyond the Cure When I was young, I equated success in our profession to saving lives. From my own childhood memories, physicians always seemed to herald the magic potion for any ailment. In kindergarten, my parents had tried vinegar baths, baking soda paste, and dozens of other home concoctions for my first eczema outbreak, but nothing even mildly soothed the intense itching. I scratched my skin until it was streaked with blood.

Strategies to Help Patients Navigate High Prescription Drug Costs
Abstract Importance In the US, many patients struggle to afford prescription drugs, leading to adverse health outcomes. To improve cost-related medication nonadherence, prescribers and clinical staff must understand how to assist patients in overcoming high prescription drug costs.
State Spending Targets for Prescription Drugs
Prescription drug spending in the US surpassed $633 billion in 2022, representing the fastest-growing category of health care expenditures.1 This trend is driven by rising prices for newly approved brand-name medications and increasing use of expensive therapies.

Black, Incarcerated, and Dying: Reflections on Racism and Inequities in Health Care
Three days after Christmas, during my first year of internal medicine residency, I received handoff about a patient who I will call John. He was being transferred from the intensive care unit to our hospital medicine service. John was paralyzed in all four extremities and unable to speak after having had a stroke, although he maintained decisional capacity with the limited ability to gently nod and shake his head in response to yes-or-no questions.

Most Primary Care Physicians Are Aware Of Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs, But Many Find The Data Difficult To Access
Prescription drug abuse in the United States is common and associated with substantial morbidity and mortality. Many classes of prescription drugs are prone to abuse. However, the diversion—or nonmedical use—of prescription opioids is particularly noteworthy because of the high frequency of associated injury, death, and other accompanying public health consequences. 1–4 Diversion of and addiction to opioids commonly occur among people who receive them directly from a single physician.

Seeing Today in Angels in America: Millennium Approaches
When Tony Kushner’s Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes premiered in 1991, it won a smattering of awards for its intense exploration of pressing, contemporary topics. A bit more than a quarter century later, the social issues and themes explored in the play are ever-relevant, and as the first show in their 2017-18 season, Ithaca College presents the first part of the play, Millennium Approaches, directed by Robert Moss.
The Prescription Opioid and Heroin Crisis: A Public Health Approach to an Epidemic of Addiction
Public health authorities have described, with growing alarm, an unprecedented increase in morbidity and mortality associated with use of opioid pain relievers (OPRs). Efforts to address the opioid crisis have focused mainly on reducing nonmedical OPR use. Too often overlooked, however, is the need for preventing and treating opioid addiction, which occurs in both medical and nonmedical OPR users.
