Equality for all: The 4A's commitment to save DE&I
Equity efforts need a strong commitment from leadership and sustained, outcome-driven investments to succeed. By Cathy Chan Butler “DEI must DIE,” the infamously bold statement from Elon Musk at the end of 2023, is a tone that unfortunately led us to where we are today. Just four short years ago, everyone was making DE&I pledges in response to the tragic murder of George Floyd.
Lonely at the Top: Investing in Generational Change for AAPI Leaders
While the saying “it’s lonely at the top” is cliche, it is also an acute reality for the less than 2% of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) women in C-suite roles. Without a large enough pool of candidates for consideration, and a trending decrease in diversity investment, how do we affect any kind of change? There is an opportunity to drive long-term, generational change. But we don’t start at the top.
3 things you must do if you want to land your dream job
By Cathy Butler 4 minute Read Demand for jobs has skyrocketed while job loss mounts due to the COVID-19 pandemic. With competition at an all-time high, job seekers have their work cut out for them—especially women, who accounted for all job loss in December 2020 according to an analysis by the National Women’s Law Center (NWLC). BIPOC and LGBTQ+ candidates and those with disabilities face even greater challenges.
Forget Balance. Choose Work/Life Flexibility and Prioritization
Jeff Bezos recently revealed that he gets eight hours of sleep a night. He tried to get by on just four hours for a while, but the quality of his decision making was impacted. Research supports a connection between sleep and job performance, including a 2019 University of Washington report, "Why Healthy Sleep Is Good for Business." The researchers found sleep deprivation in leaders results in everything from a more hostile leadership style to less success motivating their teams.

The book highlights the many pressures Gen X women face, from aging parents to record debt to C-suite expectations, resulting in what is all of our truth: a lack of sleep. Like the women in Calhoun’s book, I have my fair share of sleepless nights.

Missing: Women CEOs' Career Development. Here's How to Fix it.
The pool of women executives is small not because of a lack of women's ambition, but because we are missing opportunities to develop and inspire women executives earlier in their career. Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own. In David Gelles's New York Times article "Missing: Women CEOs," he makes a great point that boards of directors need to take a more active role in seeking diverse and entrepreneurially driven candidates. I couldn't agree more.
Classroom Conversation: Passion, Compassion, and Putting the Student First
When Liza Wilson started her career, she wanted to be the best teacher with the best lesson plans and the best classroom. Almost three decades later, her passion for teaching has not dimmed, but her philosophy of what makes the best teacher has changed. “To be a good teacher it’s not enough to have passion for teaching the content,” she said during an interview in her Carmichael Hall office.
Law Clinics: Serving Students, Society and the Profession
The offices and conference rooms exude the air of hushed industry one would expect at a busy law firm. Small interview rooms allow privacy when meeting with clients. The décor is attractive but simple, and the people friendly and efficient. This is the clinical programs suite at the UA School of Law, which provides clients and students a real-world setting in which to meet and work.
Faithful, Loyal, Firm and True: Our Alma Mater
Each noon the Denny Chimes play the Capstone’s alma mater. But could you sing along with it? Do you know the song’s lyrics, or even its title? The University of Alabama alma mater is titled “Alma Mater: University of Alabama.” The lyrics were written by a student, Helen J. Vickers, in 1908. No records have been found that reveal why 1908 was the year that UA gained its school song, or how Vickers, an Ohio transplant to Alabama, became its author.
UA Begins SACS Reaffirmation Process
The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges’ decision to reaffirm the accreditation of The University of Alabama won’t be made for more than two years, but work on the all-important distinction has already begun. Reaffirmation of accreditation (often just called reaccreditation) requires a several-step process and two elements: a compliance certification report and a quality enhancement plan (QEP).

Heather Baker, a staff member in the Office of Disability Services, led in the creation of several large, tactile maps for a student in HY 237: History of Colonial Latin America. The diverse colors shown on the map were for the benefit of the mapmakers. “We had to apply everything over the map lines and the contrasting colors helped us keep track of what needed to be put where,” Baker said.

Jason Black loves the energy, speed and gusto of NASCAR. When he talks about teaching, he displays NASCAR-level enthusiasm. “My students energize me,” he says, “and I hope I bring energy to them.” At the present moment, Black is sitting in his office, using his bit of free time between classes and appointments to talk about being a teacher, specifically a teacher of rhetoric in a public university.

Sometimes to teach the importance of the small, one must think large. That was the case when Dr. Tanja Jones, assistant professor of art history, pushed the boundaries of her classroom – both physically and virtually – to create the curriculum for her spring course ARH 373 Baroque Art of Northern Europe. The subject at hand is small, literally.
