Use of PDE5 inhibitor tied to increased glaucoma risk

Men who used the PDE5 inhibitor tadalafil (Cialis) for lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) had an increased likelihood of developing glaucoma-related clinical events, according to a large retrospective study. Rates of glaucoma, ocular hypertension, and open-angle glaucoma were significantly higher in men with a history of tadalafil prescriptions for LUTS. These patients were also significantly more likely to initiate treatment for glaucoma as compared with men who did not use a PDE5 inhibitor.

Pancreatic cancer vaccine shows interception promise in high-risk patients

A peptide vaccine targeting KRAS mutations in pancreatic cancer showed preliminary evidence of activity in a small study of high-risk patients. The vaccine elicited KRAS -specific T-cell responses in 18 of 20 patients with mutations associated with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). Vaccine-induced T-cell clonotypes persisted for up to 2 years, and no patient developed pancreatic cancer during 16.5 months of follow-up. No patient developed grade ≥3 adverse events (AEs).

HPV infection and esophageal cancer

In 1976, German virologist Harald zur Hausen, MD, DSc, proposed that human papillomavirus (HPV) causes cervical cancer, countering the widely held belief that herpes simplex virus caused the cancer. Seven years later, he proved the theory, showing that HPV genes are incorporated into cervical cancer cells. Subsequently, HPV has been shown to cause anal, penile, vulvar, vaginal, and oropharyngeal cancers, in addition to cervical cancer.
