McDermott comments: Creighton campus pulse
Greg McDermott was suspended from all team activities on Thursday night for his racially insensitive comments to the team after their loss at Xavier on February 27th. This news came as a surprise to many, considering Coach McDermott was still on the sidelines for Wednesday’s game against Villanova. McDermott was suspended upon the team's arrival back in Omaha on Thursday.

The Timberwolves Should to Act Quickly with Karl-Anthony Towns
Timberwolves Photo Credit: Noah K. Murray (USA TODAY Sports) This isn’t supposed to be alarmist. It’s easy to overreact and assume that a star player is leaving Minnesota, especially in the NBA. We’ve been there before with Kevin Garnett, Kevin Love and Jimmy Butler. I’m not trying to incite panic, but you should know that the New York Knicks front office is chock-full of people with ties to CAA, Karl-Anthony Towns’ agency.
LaMelo Ball's Boom or Bust Potential
Timberwolves Photo credit: ESPN YouTube screengrab I have two memories of watching Adam Dunn, 14-year Major League Baseball veteran, play for my hometown Chicago White Sox. The first time was in 2012, and the 6’6”, 285-pound Dunn cranked one of his 462 career home runs about 440-some feet out of right-center field.
MNUFC is Having Trouble Scoring, and It Feels Like the End of 2019 Again
Photo credit: Christopher Hanewinc (USA TODAY Sports) Share on Twitter Share on Facebook Follow us on LinkedIn A 0-0 draw saw Minnesota United FC and Nashville SC leave the pitch scoreless following the teams’ first-ever clash Tuesday evening at Nissan Stadium. Nashville out-possessed the Loons in both halves of the field while completing 502 passes to Minnesota’s 392, but the Loons out-shot the home side 13 to 10, with four shots ending up on target.
Five Affordable Public Golf Courses to Play in the Twin Cities
Mandatory Credit: Thomas J. Russo-USA TODAY Sports Minnesota Governor Tim Walz signed executive order 20-38 last Friday to lift restrictions on several recreational outdoor activities, including golf. As of Saturday, April 18, golf courses in Minnesota have been allowed to open as long as certain restrictions are in place to maintain social distancing and stop the spread of COVID-19.
Karl-Anthony Towns Pulls Back the Curtain
Timberwolves Mandatory Credit: Brace Hemmelgarn-USA TODAY Sports Late on Tuesday evening, Karl-Anthony Towns bravely peeled back the curtain, sharing that his mother, Jacqueline, has been put into a medically-induced coma while she battles symptoms of Coronavirus. Towns also shared that his father, Karl Sr., has been sent home and placed in mandated quarantine — away from his wife — battling his own symptoms of the virus. It’s awful.
Midseason Reflection: Finding the Minnesota Wild's Bright Spots at the All-Star Break
Please Credit: Harrison Barden-USA TODAY Sports As the Minnesota Wild officially hit the All-Star break for the 2019-20 campaign, they’re looking up the standings at the playoff chase. That was not unexpected when regular season play began back in October. Many expected the Wild to be on the fringe of the playoff bubble. To put it bluntly, this roller-coaster season that has been filled with high highs and crashing lows isn’t a surprise.
It's Time for Another D'Angelo Russell to the Minnesota Timberwolves Conversation
Timberwolves Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports December 15th was always going to re-open the D’Angelo Russell to the Minnesota Timberwolves conversation. Prior to the 15th, as was the case for every player who inked a new contract this past summer, there was a restriction on Russell’s new contract that prevented him from being traded.
The Best Could Be Yet to Come for Andrew Wiggins and the Minnesota Timberwolves
Timberwolves David Berding-USA TODAY Sports The numbers have always been the story with Andrew Wiggins. The highs, the lows, and the lingering aftertaste of how much did those 20 points even help? But the numbers are not the story this season. At a minimum, Wiggins’ productivity spike is not the only story — and, quite frankly, that’s what makes the change that is occurring particularly intriguing.
Predicting Landing Spots for MLBTR's 2019 Top-50 Free Agents (50-26)
Mandatory Credit: Bob DeChiara-USA TODAY Sports It’s hard to predict where an entire body of 50 players will land with any sort of accuracy. It’s sort of like doing a mock draft. You can have all the information available at your fingertips, but when one team zigs, the rest of the league zags — and the whole thing is shot.
'This Kid Can Flat Out Play': Andrew Wiggins Is Finding His Right Situation
Timberwolves David Berding-USA TODAY Sports D’Angelo Russell to the Minnesota Timberwolves did not happen this summer. Still, the pursuit of Russell was the player-specific Wolves storyline that defined the intermediate months. It wasn’t Karl-Anthony Towns taking the step. And it wasn’t Robert Covington returning from injury.
FERRELL: Guerin's Retool Path Will Have To Be Through Draft
Credit: Anne-Marie Sorvin-USA TODAY Sports As the Minnesota Wild get set to close out their worst month of October in over a decade Tuesday night, there are seemingly more questions than answers when it comes to their roster and the long term outlook of this franchise. There’s a word the team will absolutely not use when it comes to roster construction long-term, as they won’t even entertain the idea of even uttering it. That word is rebuild.
What is the Opportunity Cost of the Timberwolves New, Fast-Paced Offense?
Mandatory Credit: Brace Hemmelgarn-USA TODAY Sports This is the system Ryan Saunders always knew he wanted to implement if he was ever given the reigns to coach a NBA team. Free-flowing in nature, definitively positionless, bombing from 3-point range and, if everything goes to plan, faster than any other team in the NBA.
The Andrew Wiggins Problem is a Two-Way Street
Photo Credit: Brad Rempel (USA Today Sports) When the Minnesota Timberwolves agreed to a five-year, maximum contract extension with Andrew Wiggins in the fall of 2017, he was expected to deliver a multitude of talents and, subsequently, meaningful value. But he’s struggled mightily to live up to those expectations; after a relatively promising start to his career, the 24-year-old has hardly been an effective option for his team over the last couple of seasons.
Karl-Anthony Towns is Honing His Step-Back Three-Point Move
Photo Credit: Brace Hemmelgarn (USA Today Sports) Just 23-years-old, Minnesota Timberwolves center Karl-Anthony Towns already has a wide array of basketball moves in his bag. He’s fast enough to pump-fake and blow past opposing bigs off of the dribble. He’s got a soft-as-feathers hook-shoot that he leans on when operating out of the post.

Karl-Anthony Towns Has Become the Quarterback of the Minnesota Timberwolves
Mar 19, 2019; Minneapolis, MN, USA; Minnesota Timberwolves center Karl-Anthony Towns (32) looks on during the fourth quarter against the Golden State Warriors at Target Center. Mandatory Credit: Brace Hemmelgarn-USA TODAY Sports Karl-Anthony Towns has 31,650,600 reasons to enter this season with an edge. Despite averaging 24.4 points, 12.4 boards and 3.4 assists last season while shooting 40 percent from 3-point land, Towns was not voted onto one of the three All-NBA teams last season.
Five Observations From The Timberwolves Preseason Opener
Good ol’ preseason basketball. Yes, the result literally means nothing. The Timberwolves lost to the Suns 111 to 106, by the way. But it’s hard to not take at least something from basketball actually being played. And for the Wolves, who have replaced eight of the 15 roster spots with new faces this season, it was impossible to not be intrigued by the new and more modern system Ryan Saunders and Gersson Rosas had been talking about all summer in action. They certainly played faster.
What to Expect From Shabazz Napier, Jarrett Culver and the Timberwolves new Guards
Photo Credit: Mark J. Rebilas (USA Today Sports) Every NBA team has 19,680 minutes of playing time — plus instances of overtime — to allocate throughout its roster each season: five players are on the court at a time, games are 48 minutes a piece, 82 matchups in total. 19,680 minutes. Well, the Minnesota Timberwolves enter their 2019-20 campaign without a smattering of players that made up nearly 48% of last year’s total minutes distribution.
How Jarrett Culver Fits into the Karl-Anthony Towns Window
Throughout Tom Thibodeau’s tenure with the Minnesota Timberwolves, the matter-of-fact boss came off somewhat standoffish when talking about Karl-Anthony Towns’ role on his roster. At the same time, Jimmy Butler was publicly deriding his teammate, writing a negatively dramatized narrative about Towns’ mental makeup. But the big man never once lost his cool. Like a member of the United Kingdom’s famed Queen’s Guard, he proceeded resolutely while a bevy of passersby tried to elicit his response.
Minnesota Timberwolves Draft Prospects: Shooters
After registering 11 fewer wins last season than they did a year before, the Minnesota Timberwolves enter the summer of 2019 with myriad shortcomings upon which to improve. For the fifth consecutive campaign, they finished 24th or worse by defensive rating and 26th or worse by three-point attempts per-100 possessions in 2018-19.

Minnesota Timberwolves 2018-19 Season in Review: The Wings(ish)
It was a season of sideshows for the Minnesota Timberwolves — organizational warfare dampened expectations before a coaching change and bouts of the injury bug made mediocrity the backdrop of Karl-Anthony Towns’ second-half surge. But 82 games were played nonetheless; Towns gave his team a chance every night, Josh Okogie emerged as a piece for the future, Dario Saric and Robert Covington quickly proved their worth and a trio of former-Bulls exceeded expectations.

How forward thinking and new approaches will drive up efficiency
Charlie Johnson, CEO of biotechnology company ADC Bio, explains how substantial cost savings and faster time to market is achievable through the novel concept of combining the bioconjugation and purification steps. As an advanced manufacturing concept, integrated bioconjugation is highly promising – and is now under development – with the potential to achieve huge efficiencies in the ADC production pipeline.
NBA Roster Construction and the Wolves’ Pivotal Summer
When the NBA instituted a salary cap before the 1984-85 season, it was uncertain how fixing each team’s financial capabilities would impact the league as a whole. At the time, the NBA was the first of America’s major sports to implement such a policy; the National Football League did so in 1994, the National Hockey League in 2004-05 and Major League Baseball continues to rely on its Competitive Balance Tax (luxury tax).
Wolves vs. Rockets: Five Questions with The Dream Shake
In anticipation of Minnesota’s long awaited bask in the NBA’s post-season glow, we thought it would be good to hear the competition’s perspective on what’s to come. Darren Yuvan (@DarrenYuvan) writes for the Houston Rockets’ SB Nation site, The Dream Shake; he and I asked each other five questions ahead of Sunday’s tip. You can go see what he was curious about, and my responses, here. CJ: The Rockets’ regular season effectively wrapped up early.
NBA Playoffs 2018: Five Questions with Canis Hoopus
Nothing like a little pre-series chat with the guys covering Houston’s first-round opponent. As we often do before a playoff series, we sat down with the opposition to ask some questions about the upcoming matchup. This time, it’s our good colleagues over at Canis Hoopus, and I got the chance to chat with writer Charlie Johnson about what we can expect from the Minnesota Timberwolves in their first-round series with the Houston Rockets. I also gave my thoughts to his questions.
Wolves 116, Wizards 111: Karl-Anthony Towns
Tonight’s game started slow, with a seemingly lethargic Wolves team lapsing on defense and missing open shots on the other end. Though Towns started 2-3 from the floor, the Wolves trailed 14-10 when a timeout was called five minutes into the first quarter. But Tyus Jones gave the offense a spark off of the bench, attacking for two easy layups, and the Wolves trailed by only one, 25-26, at the end of the quarter.
Remembering and Celebrating Flip
Phillip Daniel “Flip” Saunders is a name synonymous with Minnesota basketball. After a remarkable four-year career at the University of Minnesota, Flip went on to mold the two most inspiring eras in Timberwolves’ history. As the franchise immortalizes his legacy, we remember a life that was taken far too soon. Flip grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, and excelled on the basketball court from a very young age.
How the Timberwolves have Defied the ‘Modern NBA’ to Achieve Offensive Success
During the 1999-2000 NBA season, the Golden State Warriors ranked 15th in the league attempting 13 three pointers per game. This year, the Oklahoma City Thunder are league average while heaving 29.2 a night, and the Houston Rockets lead the NBA with an astounding 43.3 attempts on average. In the same 99-00 season the Cleveland Cavaliers generated 34.5% of their offense off of mid-range jumpers, landing them 15th in the league. This year, the Boston Celtics’ 13.1% ranks 15th.
Wolves 118, Pelicans 107: 12 Straight Home Wins
MINNEAPOLIS — The Wolves entered Thursday’s home matchup with the New Orleans Pelicans having taken care of the Milwaukee Bucks on the same floor just two nights before. Tonight, another star-studded crowd packed Target Center to watch Jimmy Butler, Karl-Anthony Towns and the Wolves take on Anthony Davis’ Pelicans. It was the first game in a Pelicans uniform for Nikola Mirotic, who was traded south from the Chicago Bulls earlier this week.
