An Interview with Milton Glaser
If graphic design has a grand master, then Milton Glaser is Michelangelo. The Dylan poster. The oh-so-ripped-off “I ‘Heart’ NY” logo. The image for Angels in America. New York magazine. Everything else. “The photo is from the evening of September 10, 2001. It’s Paul McCartney, Billy Collins, George Plimpton and me at a Paris Review party. I got there late. People were whispering, ‘Paul and Heather are here.’ I came home all buzzed up. The next morning I was out on the terrace listening to Howard Stern. He says, ‘I think someone has flown a plane into the World Trade Center.’ You just couldn’t believe it. It all feeds back into that picture for me. I actually met McCartney a second time.

First things first: You're an architect, aren't you? Or at least you studied architecture at some point. Yes, I've been a registered architect for about 15 years now. I'm getting over it, though. I'm well aware that there are very elastic boundaries between architecture and (let’s say) beyond, but how does cartooning fit into your practice? It started when I was at the Harvard Graduate School of Design (GSD).
Chip Kidd Remembers
Back in 1989, with the debut of the mesmerizing, enthralling novel that was Katherine Dunn’s Geek Love, that meant something much different than it does now. It meant, well, that it was your job to bite the heads off of live chickens and . . . drink their blood. For the entertainment of others. As in, a freak show.

Most conservationists and environmentalists share this view. However, a growing group of scientists is taking a fresh look at how species interact in the wild. In The New Wild (Beacon), Pearce goes on a journey across six continents to rediscover what conservation in the 21st century should be about.

A Girl Is a Half-Formed Thing

Powell’s Q&A: Chip Kidd
Describe your latest book. Judge This is a book that evolved out of discussions with the TED Books team, chiefly my editor Michelle Quint. It is a meditation on first impressions in design and life, and when design should be clear and when it should be mysterious. And then what can happen when the two get mixed up. All using visual examples of things I encounter in my daily life and how I apply them to my work. Confused yet?
Judge This - Galleys - Medium
First impressions are the key to how we perceive the world, and are perceived by it. They are our introductions to everything: acquaintances, the workplace, products, experiences, retail stores, the Internet, entertainment, relationships, design. And based on our first impressions, we judge things. I’ve found that the two most effective and fascinating aspects of first impressions — both the ones I create and those I encounter — are at opposite ends of the spectrum: Clarity and Mystery.
Judge This by Chip Kidd
You'll see the world a little differently after reading Judge This by legendary book designer Chip Kidd, a fun and intriguing book all about first impressions. Whether you're a creative type or very much not so (ahem), Kidd gives you the tools to engage with your environment in a new way. Recommended by , Powells.com A fun, playful look at the importance of first impressions — in design and in life — from acclaimed book designer Chip Kidd. First impressions are everything.
Martin Marten by Brian Doyle

Martin Marten follows the lives of two inhabitants of "the Zag" near Rhododendron on Mt. Hood: an adolescent boy named Dave and a marten named Martin (just go with it!).
