Eight of the world's weirdest border crossings
Borders between countries can be simple lines in the sand or convoluted exercises in realpolitik, skirting seas, islands, fields and even cities. Borders are fluid. While Gibraltar's border with Spain effectively vanished last month, Spain has beefed up its highly militarised one between its Ceuta and Melilla exclaves and Morocco, which were recently breached by thousands of migrants swimming around the fence.

Britain's 10 greatest public transport icons
Chris Beanland The updated Routemaster bus is bidding goodbye to London after fewer than two decades in service. Officially the “New Bus For London”, and unofficially the “ Boris Bus ”, it was meant to channel the suave shape of its predecessor and featured natty design touches and a comfortable ride. It became a symbol of 2020s London, as the original Routemaster did half a century before. But the new Northern Ireland-built buses are now to be replaced.
Britain’s 10 greatest brutalist buildings
The surprise decision to list the Southbank Centre after many decades means that one of London’s key examples of brutalist architecture is now protected from development. It emerged from the 1951 Festival of Britain and includes the contemporary Hayward Gallery and the thrilling Queen Elizabeth Hall, whose armour-like exterior was meant to prevent noise from a heliport outside – part of the original design – clashing with the Mahler concerts.

Could this seaside town in Kent be the UK’s answer to Venice?
For 100 prosperous years ferries to France were Folkestone’s modus operandi. London-Paris trains would stop at the harbour as steamboats took passengers across the Channel. However, with the advent of the car in the 1960s, the Dover-Calais route proved more popular with drivers. And when the Channel Tunnel opened on the edge of town in 1994, Folkestone lost its principal purpose.

Ripple Effect - Glorious Sport
We speak to US designer Alex Proba about pivoting to tantalizing swimming pools: “My work is a celebration of colour and pattern.” By Chris Beanland 11/02/22 When Pablo Picasso painted the bottom of the pool at the villa El Martinete outside Marbella in 1961, a new link between swimming and art was forged – now you could admire a painting while you did front crawl.
A design-led city: The best of Lisbon's arty hotels and restaurants
From its legendary porcelain tiles to its iconic yellow trams trundling the Lapa streets, Lisbon is of course renowned across Europe as a design city. The colours of the ancient buildings – turquoise, baby blue, pink, tangerine, and everything in between set the place off and give it a unique look. The white and blue tiles on these buildings add verve. And the pavements, each decorated in a unique swirling style of black and white in patterns as diverse as curves and grids are a feast for the eyes.
‘Cars are an addiction’: How Lisbon is turning green for good
The Estufa Fria is a hidden delight in chaotic Lisbon. This botanical garden complex takes visitors around a world of plants. I pass by cacti and calathea, and even chickens and baby coots in search of an oddity. Last year, Belgian artist Nicolas Lamas tried to install his sculpture ‘Illusion of Stability’ here. It was a musing on man's existential flimsiness, the fact that we can't control the world the way we think we can. It was to prove apt.
Sail For Success
In school, Alice was on the netball, rounders and swimming teams, but at 11 she decided sailing was the one – an odd choice for someone who hates the cold and doesn’t like putting on a wetsuit. Nicknamed ‘Princess Alice’ by the team, she admitted that when they’re camping she’s the one who will bring the double airbed, dressing gown and duvet, when everyone else is on a yoga mat and sleeping bag. Sailing has a glamorous reputation, so why is the team camping?
Stories Of Strength
We speak to author and athlete Haley Shapley: “Often, women see their bodies as form more than function. Strength training helped to shift my perspective.” By Renee Brincks 14/05/21 Seattle-based journalist Haley Shapley registered for her first bodybuilding competition in 2016, ready to tackle the rigorous physical and mental training central to success. She didn’t anticipate, however, the reactions generated by her participation.
The World’s Best Hotels For Architecture Lovers
On The Road From a brutalist ski resort to a vineyard by Mr Frank Gehry, the design-led luxury places to stay in New York, Berlin and beyond The Silo Hotel, Cape Town. Photograph by Mr Mark Williams, courtesy of The Royal Portfolio Words by Mr Chris Beanland Good architecture and pertinent design should be embedded into hotels at a cellular level. Sadly, that’s not always been the case. But today hoteliers realise that this is the only way forward.

Image: Getty Share this LONDON — 22 May-27 July Hungarian artist Laszlo Moholy-Nagy barely lived for 50 years but made one hell of an artistic impression — his paintings, posters and photographs ushered in a new era of modernism, influenced as much by industrial design and the machine age as by the classics you’ll find in most art museums.
