Interview

Have you ever used a typewriter?

I learned to type on a typewriter!

How is social media changing news?

It often seems too rapid-fire to evaluate for deeper, longer-range implications.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

A mix. Most often: Google Docs, MS Word, plain old-fashioned paper and pen for brainstorming.

Why did you become a journalist?

I always wanted to write. I'd had some success interviewing and writing an Honors thesis in college, so I turned it into a career.

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

Anything unrelated to what I actually cover. I'd like to think I'm more than a warm wordsmithing body.

What's your favorite drink?

I power all my writing with green tea and am constantly on the lookout for new flavors.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

Out in nature -- either hiking, or volunteering at a local wildlife rehab facility. But also maybe in front of my TV, watching great movies!

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

I've been accused of writing "PR fluff," and there's certainly some of that. But the best trade journalism helps people work better.
