One moment, your shadow is there. The next, it's gone. That's what people across Hawaii will see this month as shadows shrink into nearly indistinguishable puddles at their feet. The phenomenon, known in the Islands as "Lahaina Noon," occurs when the sun is positioned directly overhead, causing vertical objects to cast little to no visible shadow.

On Maui, as I'm driving down the highway toward Kahului Airport, a great big sign catches my eye, and I do a double take: "Very Rich Dead People's Things for Sale." I can't stop wondering what it means. Is that a store? What kinds of things? And who are these rich dead people? I pull up next to the large warehouse, and an eclectic mix of pieces spills out of it. An oversized statue of Marilyn Monroe stands out front.

Outrigger Kauai Beach Resort & Spa completes renovation

The Outrigger Kauai Beach Resort & Spa on Kauai's eastern shore celebrated its grand reopening in June following a property-wide renovation. The project included redesigned guestrooms, refreshed public spaces and the debut of Ocean House by Roy Yamaguchi, a new signature restaurant showcasing locally sourced ingredients. Artwork by Hawaii-based artists and cultural design elements inspired by Kauai's history were also incorporated into the refresh.
