Over the last century, global life expectancy has nearly doubled. Yet, ‘adding more years to life can be a mixed blessing if it is not accompanied by adding more life to years’ (WHO, 2020). A well-functioning neuromuscular system is fundamental to ensure that more life comes with more years. Advancing age is associated with an increased risk of developing sarcopenia, the debilitating age-related loss of muscle mass and strength (Cruz-Jentoft et al., 2019; Sayer et al., 2024).
