Healthier starts: The intergenerational effects of maternal general skills
We examine the long-term e!ects of maternal general education on infant health, leveraging a nationwide secondary school reform in Spain that expanded academic instruction without increasing years of schooling. Using newly digitized enrollment data linked to administrative birth records, we find that the reform significantly reduced very preterm birth and overall prematurity, with gains concentrated at the lower tail of the gestational age distribution.
Debt-for-nature swaps: A lasting investment in nature and people
Congress formally established a program for debt-for-nature swaps, which allow countries to refinance their debts in exchange for redirecting funds toward conservation, in 1998 with the passage of the Tropical Forest Conservation Act. Lawmakers renamed it the Tropical Forest and Coral Reef Conservation Act (TFCCA) in 2019 to include an expansion of countries with coral reefs and mangroves.

Commentary: Meaningful conversations
I’m an international student originally from Madrid, Spain. I first came to the United States in 2022 with a very specific goal: to study and continue my volleyball and softball career. I started at Carl Sandburg College, where I had the opportunity to play volleyball while adjusting to a completely new culture, language, and academic system. Moving across the world at eighteen years old was both exciting and challenging.

Lawmakers Must Keep Plastics Out To Save Nature
By Cristina Marcos, World Wildlife Fund The last few months of 2024 will be pivotal for the future of our planet. This fall, world leaders will gather on the international stage in rapid succession to address plastic pollution, biodiversity loss, and climate change. We have clear momentum in advancing pragmatic, bipartisan solutions. But we must move faster and on a greater scale to save nature as we know it.
Ethics panel reviewing Rep. Ronny Jackson’s campaign spending

Jackie Walorski (Ind.), said in a statement that the panel has extended its review of Jackson after receiving a referral from the Office of Congressional Ethics (OCE), an independent watchdog, in late December.

House set to pass marijuana legalization Friday
(The Hill) — The House is set to pass legislation on Friday to legalize marijuana nationwide, an effort that has unprecedented levels of support in both chambers of Congress. The bill is likely to pass the lower chamber largely along party lines, with most Republicans expected to oppose it. Proponents argue that legalizing marijuana at the federal level will simply reflect most states’ existing policies that allow it in some form.
Is it the time to legalize marijuana nationwide?
(The Hill) — The House passed legislation on Friday to legalize marijuana nationwide and eliminate the longstanding criminal penalties for anyone who distributes or possesses it. Lawmakers passed the bill largely along party lines, 220-204, with three Republicans joining all but two Democrats in support. The measure now goes to the Senate, where Majority Leader Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., is working with fellow Democrats to introduce a marijuana legalization bill as soon as this spring.
