Nanopore sequencing is distinguished by its high portability, compared to other commercially available sequencing technologies such as the single-molecule real-time (SMRT) sequencing by PacBio and massive parallel sequencing (MPS) by Illumina and MGI Tech. The smallest sequencer now is the MinION Mk1B (Oxford Nanopore Technologies), which weighs only 87 grams. It can yield Gb-level sequencing data in a single run and has low requirements for environmental conditions.

The global prevalence of obesity has risen dramatically over the past decades, leading to an increased incidence of obesity-related diseases–including type 2 diabetes (T2D), cardiovascular disease, and liver disease, but also nonmetabolic diseases such as increased susceptibility to infection and cancer.1–6 The prevalence of obesity has generated a strong need to better understand mechanisms that lead to obesity-induced disease.
