Brees Shouts Out Former UW Coaches During Hall of Fame Speech
LARAMIE -- Drew Brees received just two scholarship offers out of Westlake High School in Austin, Texas: Kentucky and Purdue. He chose the latter and went on to throw for nearly 11,000 yards and 81 touchdowns while leading the Boilermakers to new heights, including a rare Rose Bowl appearance in 2001, putting a bow on the program's eighth Big Ten championship. If you ask former Wyoming wide receiver Marcus Harris, all that damage above could've easily happened in Laramie.
There Was ‘Never a Doubt’ Samuel Harris Would Remain a Cowboy
LARAMIE -- Never a doubt. In an era of agents, demands and major financial obligations, Jay Sawvel said Samuel Harris calmed his nerves quickly as the always anxiety-riddled offseason began to unfold. The freshman running back they call "Tote," on the heels of an impressive season that saw him scamper for a team-high 558 yards, made his intentions crystal clear, Wyoming's third-year head coach said. "He said, 'Coach, I'm coming back. I love it here,'" Sawvel added.
Wyoming's Tight End Receives Invite to 2026 NFL Scouting Combine
LARAMIE -- John Michael Gyllenborg is one of 319 prospects to receive an invitation to the upcoming NFL Scouting Combine. The former Wyoming tight end will run through drills and other exercises in front of scouts Feb. 23 through March 2 inside Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. He is the first Cowboy to be invited to the combine since offensive lineman Frank Crum and linebacker Eaton Gibbs participated in 2024.
Trio of Cowboys Set to Play in Hula Bowl This Weekend
LARAMIE -- Three former Cowboys will participate in the Hula Bowl on Saturday in Deland, Fla. Center Jack Walsh, guard Caden Barnett and tight end Evan Svoboda are set to play in the All-Star game features some of the nation's top seniors. Walsh appeared in and started all 12 games at center. He has played all three positions on the offensive line in his career. He earned Honorable Mention All-Mountain West honors this past season.
Wyoming's Joey Novak Claims Soldier Salute Wrestling Title in Iowa
CORALVILLE, Iowa – The University of Wyoming wrestling team wrapped up competition at the Soldier Salute Tournament on Sunday inside Xtreme Arena. The Cowboys placed third as a team with 126.5 points, and No. 4 Joey Novak (197) punctuated the tournament with an individual championship. “Certainly, I don’t think Joey wrestled up to his capabilities, but he found a way to win tough matches,” head coach Mark Branch said.
Wyoming's Secondary Just Got Thinner; Justin Taylor to Transfer
LARAMIE -- Wyoming's secondary takes another hit. Just days after defensive backs Tyrese Boss, Markie Grant and Caleb Merritt announced their decision to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal, junior safety Justin Taylor Friday made it known he will also seek a new opportunity with two seasons of eligibility remaining. The 6-foot, 198-pound Chicago product appeared in all 12 games during his lone season in Laramie, sharing time at the boundary with Andrew Johnson.
PODCAST: Cowboys Offense, Quarterbacks Going Under the Microscope
LARAMIE -- Missed opportunities. Will that be the story of the 2025 Wyoming football team? With conference title hopes gone, the focus now shifts to postseason eligibility. The road to six wins begins Saturday night in Fresno when the Cowboys take on the Bulldogs inside Valley Children's Stadium. Jay Sawvel's squad needs to squeeze two victories out of the final three games. Wyoming hosts Nevada the following Saturday and caps the regular season on the Hawaiian islands. No easy task.
Tuck's Take: Guard-Heavy Assault Lifts Cowboys in Opener
LARAMIE -- Sundance Wicks says he wants relentless pressure from this guard-heavy lineup at both ends of the floor. That certainly happened, offensively, in Monday night's 99-75 season-opening victory over the head coach's alma mater. It was Obi Agbim's show last year. Now, there are options. Lots of them. Wyoming guards combined for 85 points and all 14 assists. Five finished in double-figures. Northern State, a Division-II program from Aberdeen, S.D., was outscored in the paint, 62-24.
Wyoming to Debut Coal-Inspired Uniforms in Border War

Tuck's Take: A Lot Had to Go Right in a Game Where Little Did
BOULDER, Colo., -- A lot of things needed to go right on a night when little did. Jay Sawvel, less than 48 hours removed from a 37-20 loss to Colorado inside a sold-out Folsom Field, laid out his vision for how he wanted the final 4:32 to play out.

Tuck's Take: Pokes' Upset Bid Collides With Stark Reality
LARAMIE -- Jay Sawvel said Monday during his weekly press conference he didn't see any weaknesses on film with this Utah football team. Wyoming's second-year head coach echoed those same sentiments five nights later just moments after a 31-6 setback, courtesy of the No. 20 program in the country. Sure, the focus was on Devon Dampier, and rightfully so. The Utes' dynamic signal caller gashed the Cowboys for 207 rushing yards and three touchdowns under center at New Mexico.
Wyoming's Jaylen Sargent Called Opening-Night Benching a 'Wake-Up Call'
LARAMIE -- Eighteen. That's how many snaps Jaylen Sargent was on the field for in Wyoming's season-opening victory at Akron. That was nine runs and the same number of pass plays. The senior receiver didn't make a single catch. In fact, he wasn't even targeted. Was he hurt? Under the weather? "He's got to play better," Jay Sawvel said the following Monday after that 10-0 blanking of the Zips. "There were some plays that he didn't play to the standard of what we wanted on those plays.
Three Keys To a Wyoming Cowboys Victory vs. Utah
LARAMIE -- Las Vegas has little faith in Wyoming this Saturday night against visiting Utah. The spread currently sits at -23.5 in favor of the 20th-ranked Utes. You won't get an argument from Jay Sawvel. "They've got a quarterback in Devin Dampier that I don't think we've stopped ever," Wyoming's second-year head coach said last Monday, adding his defense needs to "build a fence" around the elusive playmaker.
PODCAST: Do You Still Consider Utah a 'Hated' Rival?
LARAMIE -- When it comes to hated rivals, two seem to immediately roll right off the tongue: Colorado State and BYU. There's plenty of good reasons for that. For me, Air Force is up there, too. Yes, I understand what it means to go to the academy and their higher calling in this world. Still, it's a bitter series and they are based in that state. Ask most former and current Wyoming players and they'll tell you Troy Calhoun's Falcons are right at the top. Agreed. Wholeheartedly.
Wyoming's Josh Allen Announces His No. 17 Jersey Will Be Retired
LARAMIE -- If you were wondering why Evan Svoboda and Malique Singleton no longer wear the No. 17, the cat is officially out of the bag. Josh Allen, appearing last Friday on the Like A Farmer Podcast, announced his jersey at Wyoming will be retired during the Cowboys' home finale Nov. 22 against Nevada. The reigning NFL MVP said he will be in attendance and this will be his first time back in Laramie since his Pro Day workout back in 2018.
Wyoming's Tyce Westland -- Quietly -- Continues to Carve Out His Path
LARAMIE -- Wyoming's staff loved his length, movement and skill. Once ingrained into the program's strength and conditioning program, that group said the ceiling could become even higher for Tyce Westland, who already possessed a number of intangibles. Now, five years later, he checks all of those boxes. Standing 6-foot-5 and weighing in at 241, the senior edge rusher certainly looks the part, even featuring six-pack abs.
PODCAST: UW's No-Name Defense Flexes Muscles in Rubber City
LARAMIE -- Kaden Anderson wasn't about to apologize during his postgame press conference Thursday night outside a joyous visiting locker room. Nor should he. Wyoming's sophomore quarterback, smiling ear to ear, was fresh off a 19-for-36 performance in which he threw for 260 yards and a touchdown in a 10-0 victory over Akron inside InfoCision Stadium. Was it ideal? No. The Cowboys were just 2-of-4 on 3rd-and-2 or less. That mark dropped even more on fourth down, landing at 1-for-3.
'Small-School' Linebacker Steals Spotlight in Wyoming Shutout
LARAMIE -- Joe Moorhead likely wasn't trying to dish out any bulletin-board material before last Thursday's opener. A seemingly innocent line during his weekly press conference, though, didn't sit well with one Wyoming newcomer. "They've added probably five or six transfers from smaller, lower-level schools, and a kid from Wisconsin, as well," Akron's fourth-year head coach said, referring to the Cowboys' new-look defense.
Behind the Numbers: Just How Good Was Wyoming's Defense at Akron?
LARAMIE -- Twenty-two. That's the number of players defensive coordinator Aaron Bohl trotted out onto the field last Thursday night during the Cowboys' Week 1 meeting with Akron. Four different cornerbacks, safeties and linebackers saw minutes in Wyoming's 10-0 blanking of the Zips inside soggy InfoCision Stadium. Why is that significant? Connor Shay and Shae Suiaunoa, for instance, were on the field for a combined 1,522 snaps last fall from the linebacker spot, according to Pro Football Focus.
Hallelujah, Wyoming is Finally Returning Punts
LARAMIE -- Benny Boyd's words are telling. In fact, some might go as far to call them mind-boggling. "It was a program philosophy with coach (Craig) Bohl: just catch it and get it back to the offense," he said. "Don't screw it up." He's referring to returning punts, a facet of the game the Cowboys have floundered at -- to put it mildly -- since 2020, the year Boyd, the co-special teams coordinator and cornerbacks coach, arrived in Laramie. The stats certainly backup his claim.
LARAMIE -- Wyoming's offense snapped the ball on fourth down 25 times last fall. Some -- maybe most -- of that was out of pure necessity. The Cowboys oftentimes found themselves trailing on the scoreboard during a maddening 3-9 campaign, beginning with a winless non-conference slate that saw thatmuch-malignedunit convert a respectable 4-of-8 opportunities. For comparison's sake, former head coach Craig Bohl, just one year prior, left his offense on the field a total of just nine times all season.
Who Will Land the Starting Role in Wyoming's Running Back Room?
LARAMIE -- "It looks different, right?" Jay Sawvel interrupted mid-question when asked about the running back room, one that last fall was decimated by injury and, in some cases, ineffectiveness. Wyoming's second-year head coach said in the winter he was doing a major overhaul at that position and wanted to carry at least eight guys on the roster. Mission accomplished.
Tuck's Takes: 25 Observations from Wyoming Fall Football Camp
LARAMIE -- We came. We saw. We reported. Wyoming's local media was permitted to attend three of the Cowboys' first four official fall practices last week in Laramie. That was previously unheard of. Jay Sawvel has opened it all up. The second-year head coach lives and breathes football. He also believes in transparency. Because of that, figured I would relay what I witnessed in bullet form: * Competition. That has been the buzz word in Laramie throughout the first handful of practices.

The brand-new product, Pretty Good Horse Bourbon will feature a distinctive and eye-catching Brown and Gold label, featuring the famous Bucking Horse & Rider and several other elements of the University of Wyoming and the State of Wyoming brands.
Pokes Practice Report: Laying the Lumber in Laradise
LARAMIE -- Practice No. 3 on the North 40 practice field Wednesday didn't just look competitive, Jay Sawvel said it sounded violent, too. That's exactly what Wyoming's second-year head coach is looking for from his new-look roster, especially on the defensive side of the ball. "We are a much bigger football team at numerous positions," he said, following the Cowboys first workout in shoulder pads.
UW To Pay $2.8 Million to Student-Athletes as Part of House Settlement
LARAMIE -- "No brainer." That's what Tom Burman called the University of Wyoming's decision to "opt in" to the recently resolved House Settlement, which not only allows schools to enter into a revenue-sharing model with their student-athletes, but finally puts some rules in place during an uncertain time in college athletics.
Wyoming Loses Two Defensive Tackles With Season-Ending Injuries
LARAMIE -- Two potential starters at the defensive tackle spot suffered season-ending injuries during summer workouts. Wyoming head coach Jay Sawvel announced Monday, the opening day of fall camp, Caleb Robinson and Dante Drake both sustained a torn Achilles tendon while running shuttle drills. "It hurts," Sawvel said. "What happens is, you try to build it up, right? We felt like, OK, we're in a really good spot. We've got, you know, six guys that could play. Now, we've got four.
Wyoming Cowboys Gear Up For A Fresh Start As Training Camp Kicks Off
LARAMIE -- Wyoming football season is right around the corner. Jay Sawvel and his team will hit the practice fields in Laramie July 28, kicking off training camp just 31 days ahead of the Cowboys Thursday night opener at Akron. Nearly 50 new players -- both freshmen and portal signings -- litter this new-look roster as this program attempts to put a disappointing 3-9 season even further in the rear-view mirror.

In the classroom, they needed to possess a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher.

The departures of Wrook Brown, Sabastian Harsh and Keany Parks only magnified things.

The departures of Wrook Brown, Sabastian Harsh and Keany Parks only magnified things.
Former 6'9" Drake University Commit Inks With Pokes
LARAMIE -- Simm-marten Saadi was on his way to Drake. In fact, the 6-foot-9 freshman even signed the paperwork in late November. The Bulldogs rolled through the regular season, won the Missouri Valley Conference tournament and toppled Mizzou in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. A narrow loss to Texas Tech followed. So did a coaching change. Ben McCollum pointed his car east on Interstate-80 and cruised 114 miles to Iowa City where he is the new bench boss. Saadi asked for his release.
