Herta topped the 45-minute session around the 11-turn, 1.786-mile Exhibition Place street course with a best lap of 1m00.5657s. With rain threatening, the track was busy right from the start of the session as teams tried to get runs in before the showers took hold. IndyCar Road America: Herta takes last-gasp pole for Andretti
On the recently-repaved 4.048-mile road course, Dario Franchitti’s qualifying track record of 1m39.866s remained out of reach despite the new high-grip surface. The Fast Six shootout was an intriguing battle, with most cars running the harder primary tyres but Arrow McLaren’s practice pacesetter Alexander Rossi gambled on the softer alternates. O’Ward set the early pace with 1m41.9957s on primaries, which Rossi beat with 1m41.4587s on his alternates.

St. Pete IndyCar: Herta, Kirkwood top raceday warm-up
There was plenty of experimentation with tires in the 78 degree heat and increasing humidity under cloudy skies. Firestone’s guayule-sidewalled tires had a noticeable peak for one lap – two by the gentlest driver/car combinations – but drivers and race engineers still needed to know how long they could make them last in what will be a 100-lap race dominated by the primary tire.
St. Pete IndyCar: Grosjean grabs pole in crash-filled qualifying
The Firestone Fast Six quickly turned into the 'non-crashing four', with Grosjean coming out on top over Herta, Pato O'Ward and Marcus Ericsson. Kyle Kirkwood started the session at a disadvantage, having used two sets of fresh alternate Firestones to get out of Q1, so had no fresh alternates for the final segment of qualifying. That issue seemed small when he slid straight on at the final turn, and missed the tire barrier to crunch hard into the concrete. He drove the wreckage back to pitlane.
IndyCar St. Petersburg: Dixon leads Herta in incident-packed opening practice
The first red flag of the session was caused by Benjamin Pedersen locking up into Turn 4, the car trying to swivel left, and making hard contact with its left front wing against the wall. The second red flag was caused by a concrete patch of the track on the exit of fifth-gear Turn 3 coming up that needed clearing. By then the remaining three rookies – Marcus Armstrong, Sting Ray Robb and Agustin Canapino – had laid down their first five laps, since newcomers are granted an extra set of tyres.
Daytona 24: Ganassi Cadillacs top final GTP practice at Daytona

Their rivals swiftly followed suit.

IndyCar Mid-Ohio: Herta leads Andretti Autosport 1-2-3 in Race 2 Original
Polesitter Colton Herta made a strong start in the Andretti Harding Steinbrenner Racing-Honda but Santino Ferrucci was his equal and as he drew alongside turning into Turn 4 he was pushed wide onto the grass. Most drivers squeezed in two laps on fresh tires to simulate their runs in qualifying which has a unique format for this weekend’s double-header.
What time and channel is the IndyCar race today? Original
This race, which normally signals the start of the ‘Month of May’ at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, culminating in the Indianapolis 500 on Memorial Day Weekend, has been shifted by two months due to the pandemic. However, in the dying seconds of the session, the #88 HSR car looped into the runoff on the outside of the initial left-hand part of the Corkscrew, and no amount of wheelspinning could recover the situation without outside assistance.
IndyCar touts positive gains as season nears an end
MONTEREY, Calif. — When a 19-year-old rookie paces the field at an unfamiliar and technically demanding race track, it catches the attention of veterans who wonder if the kid is fearless or foolish whipping around historic Laguna Seca Raceway. Will Power went with "definitely brave" in describing Colton Herta's successful first day hurtling through 11 fast corners of the 2.258-mile road course. Then came Day 2.
Portland IndyCar: Herta beats Power to pole, Newgarden slips up

Team Penske-Chevrolet’s Will Power elected to go for just a ‘one-and-done’ effort, but after a lock-up into the first corner which flat-spotted his right-front tire – “my fault for not warming the brakes better” – he fell an agonizing 0.0192sec of claiming pole.

Mid-Ohio IndyCar: Herta fastest in FP2, Newgarden shunts

His fastest no-tow lap was 216.132mph, putting him 13th fastest.
Detroit IndyCar: Newgarden, Rossi on front row for Race 2
In Group 1, (Group 2 from yesterday) Chip Ganassi Racing’s Scott Dixon and Alexander Rossi looked a cut above their rivals on the primary tires, but with heavy rain overnight, the Firestone alternate compound rubber was the way to go. IndyCar GP: Herta leads Dixon in warm-up

Barber IndyCar: Hinchcliffe leads Herta in second practice
The Arrow Schmidt Peterson Motorsports-Honda driver lapped in 68.999sec at 120.001mph to beat Colton Herta’s Harding Steinbrenner Racing-Honda by a mere 0.009sec. COTA IndyCar: Herta becomes series' youngest ever winner
Team Penske-Chevrolet’s polesitter Power led every single lap, with Rossi in close attendance, until the race’s only full-course caution – caused by a collision between James Hinchcliffe and Felix Rosenqvist that left the rookie’s Ganassi-Honda stranded at the entrance to pitlane – closed the pitlane. Power, Rossi and Scott Dixon were yet to pit and under caution the field packed up behind them, so they were passed by every unlapped runner.
