Cough hypersensitivity risk increases during heatwaves and can be reduced by inhalation of alkaline aerosols of endogenous ions
Abstract Heat wave burden is rapidly rising and exacerbating human respiratory illnesses. Yet, how to protect human airways, short of deep and sustained reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, remains unclear. Here, we find, by theoretical, in vitro experimental, and human clinical studies, that heatwave exposure elevates risks of cough hypersensitivity, which can be reversed by the inhalation of alkaline hypertonic divalent salts (HDS).

Retraction Note: Sub-second periodicity in a fast radio burst
|
Retraction to: Nature https://doi.org/10.1038/s41586-022-04841-8 Published online 13 July 2022 The authors have retracted this article after identifying a crucial error: due to an unusual calibration problem, CHIME’s digital beams were incorrectly pointed when FRB 20191221A was detected. The sub-second periodicity that they associated with the putative fast radio burst FRB 20191221A was, in reality, a periodic signal from the known Galactic pulsar PSR J0248 + 6021.

Noncovalently functionalized carbon microspheres for separating no-carrier added 177Lu from real neutron-irradiated 176Yb target
Hydrothermal carbon (HTC) originated from inexpensive biomass has been considered as high-value-added products beneficial to energy saving and emission reduction[1]. Despite their great potential in various research topics of sorption, catalysis, biomedicine, etc. [2], [3], [4], the wide engineering application of HTC has not been achieved so far. The underlying reason for this is the complexity of chemically functionalizing the raw HTC with specific features in practice.
Molecular sieve redefines SPR sensible range for “win-win” dual functions to enhance the sensitization and anti-fouling
Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensors have been extensively employed in the diagnosis of numerous diseases owing to their real-time, label-free, and highly sensitive detection capabilities. Nevertheless, their label-free and high-sensitivity detection attributes impose elevated demands on both the sensitizing and antifouling layers of the sensing interface, rendering them focal points and challenges in research endeavors.

Generation of complete graph states in a spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain with a globally optimized magnetic field
Graph states possess significant practical value in measurement-based quantum computation, with complete graph states that exhibit exceptional performance in quantum metrology. In this work, we introduce a method for generating multiparticle complete graph states using a spin-1/2 Heisenberg XX chain subjected to a time-varying magnetic field, which applies to a wide range of systems.
Tuning the spin-orbit coupling, magnetic proximity, and band hybridization in $\mathrm{Fe(001)}\text{/}\mathrm{MgO}\text{/}{\mathrm{MoS}}_{2}$ multilayers
We present first-principles calculations of the electronic structure and spin texture of a MoS2 monolayer in Fe/MgO/MoS2 multilayers. These metal/insulator/semiconductor stackings are subject to an electron transfer from the Fe layer to the MoS2 sheet, giving rise to a two-dimensional (2D) electron gas, the density of which depends on the MgO layer thickness.

Enhanced separation via confined shear flow in microchannel: A novel insight into the role of confined hydrogen bonds in microfluid and its effect on competitive mass transfer of hydrated ions
The selectivity in separation of ions is closely related to their competitive mass transfer behaviors within the confined fluid near the interface boundary layer. Microfluids possess unique structures and properties that can simulate the environment of the confined fluid within the near-interface boundary layer [1], [2], [3], [4]. In microscale systems, viscous forces and surface tension dominate inertial forces when compared to conventional macroscale systems [5], [6].
Spatiotemporal control of high-intensity laser pulses with a plasma lens
Spatiotemporal control encompasses a variety of techniques for producing laser pulses with dynamic intensity peaks that move independently of the group velocity. This controlled motion of the intensity peak offers a new approach to optimizing laser-based applications and enhancing signatures of fundamental phenomena. Here, we demonstrate spatiotemporal control with a plasma optic.

Change of Rotation Measure during the Eclipse of a Black Widow PSR J2051−0827
Spider pulsars are millisecond pulsars (MSPs) with low-mass companions in short-period orbits (Fruchter et al. 1988; Roberts 2013). They are descendants of low-mass X-ray binaries after accretion onto the pulsar has terminated (Archibald et al. 2009; Stappers et al. 2014). Redbacks (RBs) and black widows (BWs) are two types of spider pulsars with different companion masses.

A fast radio burst source at a complex magnetized site in a barred galaxy - Nature
Abstract Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are highly dispersed, millisecond-duration radio bursts1,2,3. Recent observations of a Galactic FRB4,5,6,7,8 suggest that at least some FRBs originate from magnetars, but the origin of cosmological FRBs is still not settled. Here we report the detection of 1,863 bursts in 82 h over 54 days from the repeating source FRB 20201124A (ref. 9).
A repeating fast radio burst associated with a persistent radio source - Nature
Abstract The dispersive sweep of fast radio bursts (FRBs) has been used to probe the ionized baryon content of the intergalactic medium1, which is assumed to dominate the total extragalactic dispersion. Although the host-galaxy contributions to the dispersion measure appear to be small for most FRBs2, in at least one case there is evidence for an extreme magneto-ionic local environment3,4 and a compact persistent radio source5.

High thermoelectric performance of n-type Bi2Te2.7Se0.3 via nanostructure engineering
BiSbTe has been realized as an ideal p-type thermoelectric material near room temperature; however, its commercial applications are largely restricted by its n-type counterpart that exhibits relatively inferior thermoelectric performance. In this work, n-type BiTeSe based composites Bi Te Se –f InSb (0 ≤ f ≤ 2.5 vol%) are prepared by a ball milling and spark plasma sintering method. A record-high ZT value of ∼1.22 is achieved at 323 K for Bi Te Se –1.5 vol% InSb composites.
