Assessing the Trump-Xi Summit with Da Wei
Expectations for the 3rd Trump-Xi summit since Trump returned to power were modest, and the meeting delivered limited concrete outcomes: a two-month extension of the trade war truce, lower tariffs on some US and Chinese goods, an agreement to talk more about AI risks, two pandas for the Atlanta zoo, and a potential MOU between the US and Chinese militaries on crisis prevention and management.

The Emerging U.S.-China Détente
When Chinese leader Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump met in Beijing, in May, they agreed that their two countries should build a constructive relationship of strategic stability. Although many observers in Washington responded skeptically to this new framework, dismissing it as empty words, it marks the first time in more than a decade that China and the United States established a consensus about how to define the relationshipthat leaders on both sides broadly recognize.

Da Wei: China Does not Want America’s Job
China neither seeks nor intends to replace the United States in filling any so-called “vacuum”, nor should it be expected to play such a role, says leading Tsinghua IR scholar Da Wei in the recent interview with The Paper. As the U.S. pulls back from parts of the international order it once helped to build, questions are growing over whether China will seek to fill the space Washington leaves behind.

What to Expect from the Trump-Xi Summit: A Conversation with Dr. Da Wei
President Donald Trump is expected to visit Beijing from March 31 to April 2 for a summit with Chinese leader Xi Jinping. It will mark the first meeting between the two leaders since they agreed to a trade truce last October that ended months of escalating tensions prompted by tariffs imposed by the United States and Chinese restrictions on rare earth exports.

America and China Can Have a Normal Relationship
In the repeated cycles of confrontation and détente that define U.S.-Chinese relations, a paradox has emerged. Economic relations between the two countries are more fraught than ever: in early October, for the second time in just six months, the United States and China launched a trade war, imposing prohibitive export restrictions and threatening to raise tariffs to previously unthinkable levels. Yet the U.S.-Chinese relationship also appears increasingly resilient.

What awaits the next Trump-Xi meeting?
Less than 20 days before the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in South Korea, economic tensions between China and the United States have once again escalated dramatically, casting serious uncertainty over the prospect of a bilateral meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping during the summit.

What Does China Want in Ukraine?
The war in Ukraine continues to shape China’s foreign relations. When European leaders visited Beijing last week to discuss trade and security, the need to find a resolution to the war was one major reason why Chinese-European relations had reached an “inflection point”, according to Ursula von der Leyen, the European Commission president. For Europe, China’s close ties with Russia and perceived support for its war effort have overshadowed ties between China and Europe for more than three years.

Observe, Don’t Optimize
What parenting and plants have quietly taught me. Not long into new parenthood, I found myself thinking about soil. More specifically, I started noticing how the way I approached caring for my baby bore a strange resemblance to how I tend to my plants. It’s not that babies are plants (though both seem to thrive on sunlight, warmth, and a good nap), but something about the way we learn to care for them feels oddly familiar.

Scaling Transition of Active Turbulence from Two to Three Dimensions
1 Introduction Active fluids exhibit spontaneous turbulent flows at low Reynolds number (Re), which have been observed in bacterial suspensions,[1-3] sperm swarms,[4] mixtures of microtubules and motor proteins,[5-7] epithelial cells,[8, 9] and artificial motile colloids.[10] These active fluids are constituted of a large number of self-driven agents that inject kinetic energy individually into the systems. These agents generate active stress and drive the formation of turbulence.
Biomimetic Synchronization in Biciliated Robots
Direct mechanical coupling is known to be critical for establishing synchronization among cilia. However, the actual role of the connections is still elusive—partly because controlled experiments in living samples are challenging. Here, we employ an artificial ciliary system to address this issue. Two cilia are formed by chains of self-propelling robots and anchored to a shared base so that they are purely mechanically coupled.

The younger flagellum sets the beat for Chlamydomonas reinhardtii
Editor's evaluation This important manuscript investigates how the two flagella of C. reinhardtii, which have inherently different dynamic properties, synchronize their beating. Through careful, non-invasive experiments, the authors help the field to understand the mechanisms responsible for this synchronization, arguing that these mechanisms are due to unilateral coupling between the two flagella.

Elevation-dependent pattern of net CO2 uptake across China - Nature Communications
Abstract The elevation gradient has long been known to be vital in shaping the structure and function of terrestrial ecosystems, but little is known about the elevation-dependent pattern of net CO2 uptake, denoted by net ecosystem productivity (NEP). Here, by analyzing data from 203 eddy covariance sites across China, we report a negative linear elevation-dependent pattern of NEP, collectively shaped by varying hydrothermal factors, nutrient supply, and ecosystem types.

Simultaneous linewidth narrowing of a multi-wavelength laser array with an arbitrary wavelength spacing based on Rayleigh backscattering is experimentally demonstrated. Rayleigh backscattering from a single 30 m high numerical aperture fiber (HNAF) is employed to simultaneously narrow the linewidths of a DFB laser array consisting of four distributed feedback (DFB) semiconductor lasers with different wavelengths.
Avoiding Misperception in the China-US Thaw - Tribune Content Agency
The China-U.S. relationship is undergoing a “thaw,” to use U.S. President Joe Biden’s term. The consecutive visits of U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, Special Envoy for Climate John Kerry, and Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo to China over the last few months are clear indicators. The two countries are trying to stabilize the bilateral relationship before their presidents meet again next week.

How America and China can get along better
At last, tensions between China and America are showing signs of easing, albeit with the occasional setback. At the recent G7 summit, President Joe Biden predicted a near-term “thaw” in relations between the two countries. Last week China’s commerce minister met his American counterpart and the US Trade Representative. This followed talks between America’s national security adviser and the head of the Chinese Communist Party’s Foreign Affairs Commission.

Beyond the China-U.S. Wrestling Match
With the Donald Trump and Joe Biden administrations comprehensively adjusting America’s China policy over the past few years, the previous strategy — with “engagement” at its core — has given way to “strategic competition.” Facing the U.S. side’s various examples of hegemony and power politics, the Chinese side has naturally countered and fought back resolutely. Within this circle of U.S. suppression and Chinese retaliation in recent years, relations have plunged.

Thinking beyond US-China bilateral competition to win race with Washington
China US In the past few years, the two recent US administrations have comprehensively adjusted their strategies toward China, and the policy of "engagement" has been replaced by "strategic competition." In the face of Washington's actions that pursue hegemony and power politics, China has, justifiably, resolutely counteracted and fought back. In the cycle of "US crackdown and Chinese counterattack," bilateral relations have seen a downward spiral.

Over two months after Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered a “special military operation” in eastern Ukraine on February 24, 2022, it is clear that the military progress on the Russian side is not going well. Up till now, the fighting has been going on for over 100 days, with the two warring sides still in an offensive and defensive stalemate. For how long will the war last? Will one side be completely defeated by the other?

China-U.S. Detente: Avoiding Overestimation and Underappreciation
China-U.S. relations, which deteriorated steadily after the Trump administration launched it so-called trade war in May 2018 and have been stagnant since Biden's inauguration in January, have finally shown some positive momentum. The release of Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou pulled out a painful thorn. Ranking diplomats of the two countries held fruitful talks in Zurich, and trade, climate and military teams have begun reestablish contact.
Fibrous Flagellar Hairs of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii Do Not Enhance Swimming
Abstract The flagella of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii possess fibrous ultrastructures of a nanometer-scale thickness known as mastigonemes. These structures have been widely hypothesized to enhance flagellar thrust; however, detailed hydrodynamic analysis supporting this claim is lacking. In this study, we present a comprehensive investigation into the hydrodynamic effects of mastigonemes using a genetically modified mutant lacking the fibrous structures.
