TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - The Lois Curtis Center held a celebration this week to honor the birthday of the late disability rights activist for whom it is named. Lois Curtis would have turned 59 on July 14. The event--held Saturday, July 18--featured art and music and marked the first birthday celebration hosted by the center. “We’ve only been around since about 2024. We had our grand opening, but this is our first birthday for Lois,” said Ami Hyten, director of the Lois Curtis Center.

VFW rallies at Kansas Statehouse against proposed veteran benefit cuts

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Veterans gathered at the Kansas Statehouse to oppose a section of federal legislation they say would cut benefits for future veterans with tinnitus. The Kansas VFW focused its opposition on Section 108 of the “Take Care of America’s Veterans Act,” which addresses sleep apnea, tinnitus and proposed reductions to those benefits.
