TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Before Carroll Ray “Dink” Mothell was remembered as a Negro Leagues star, he was nearly forgotten. When the Topeka native died in 1980, he was buried at Mount Hope Cemetery without a headstone. It wasn’t until 2011, more than three decades later, that historians with the Negro Leagues Baseball Grave Marker Project and the Society for American Baseball Research installed a monument honoring one of the Kansas City Monarchs’ most versatile players.

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - The Valdivia family ran a full kitchen at Fiesta Topeka Friday, July 17, with members traveling from California and Texas to take orders and assemble dishes for attendees. Shelly Valdivia-Garcia, the family’s food captain, said the work is a shared effort. “The family enjoys it. I think everybody looks forward to it,” Valdivia-Garcia said. Veronica Adame, a Topeka resident and member of the family, described the scope of the out-of-state turnout.
