360 Rain cuts evaporation and expands field irrigation coverage

Carl Brubacher’s swine operation produces about 1.5 million gallons of manure, and short springs and wet falls make field application a challenge. Enter the newest addition to his farm arsenal, 360 Rain, an autonomous irrigation system for manure, nutrients and water. “It’s just a game changer in how to take manure to a growing crop, getting it on the crop when it needs it,” said Brubacher, Carlotte Ag owner, during the Grand River Robotics 360 Rain demonstration day his family hosted near Arthur.

Ten years ago, after leaving mainstream media to cultivate a new career in agricultural journalism, I began longing for newsroom camaraderie. A home office doesn’t have the same energy as volleying ideas back and forth with colleagues. It’s more like balancing deadlines and the demands of my (two- and four-legged) “co-workers.” But a crop tour, a field demonstration day or a farm show? That’s straight-up newsroom-Disneyland vibes, threaded through with community and shared knowledge.

Tedding tips for crop and implement optimization

The 2026 Forage Expo delivered an impromptu TED-ding talk to accompany its machinery demos on July 9, near Norwood. Tedding time, technique and technology can all have an impact when making dry hay or silage. To provide real-time comparisons, Kubota’s TE6576C and Kuhn’s 5203 THA large rotor tedder were put through their paces as part of the event, hosted by the East Central Region Soil and Crop Improvement Association and the Ontario Forage Council.
