Damian Kerlin is a culture and LGBTQ+ journalist, broadcaster, and rising talent in radio and podcasting. He is the host of Memories from the Dance Floor, the acclaimed Acast-commissioned podcast that celebrates LGBTQ+ venues and club nights, offering an intimate look at their history, community, and music. The series, praised by The Sunday Times, The Financial Times, and The Guardian, was recommissioned for a second season, released during Pride Month in June 2024.

It repeated its lessons until you learned them, whether you wanted to or not. In the middle of all that, I grew up listening to things that didn’t speak, translating silence into meaning, letting the fields and ditches and shifting light tell me who I was long before I had language for it.

Historically, queer and trans people have struggled to define themselves within a patriarchal and capitalist culture, with marginal forms of identity and expression such as bisexuals and non-binary persons often having to resist minimalisation as being “not gay enough”, or “not trans enough”. For queer squatters living under cishet capitalism, LGBTQIA+ liberation is only partially to do with sex, and everything to do with gender norms and class warfare.

A messy history of LGBTQ+ dating shows

Reality TV should represent reality, albeit a far wilder, more interesting version, yet that's not been the case historically, especially when it comes to dating shows. Ever since ABC's The Dating Game first made us swoon in 1965, the genre has grown and grown as networks (and now streamers) far and wide dared to ask, "Can we find love on TV?" But that so-called "we" regularly failed to include the LGBTQ+ community, choosing to focus on the dating lives of straight, cisgender contestants instead.
