Hitler and the Nazi Party
Summary This chapter explores Hitler’s role in the Nazi Party, with a particular focus on Hitler’s relationship to antisemitism. It carefully examines the evidence concerning Hitler’s views towards Jews, and argues forcefully for the emergence in the 1920s of a vision that was already at least implicitly genocidal and certainly murderous.
The liberation of Dachau was not a moment of celebration
The great journalist Martha Gellhorn was in Dachau when the German army surrendered unconditionally to the Allies. “It was a suitable place to be,” she wrote. “For surely this war was made to abolish Dachau and all the other places like Dachau and everything that Dachau stands for. To abolish it forever.
Wyzwolenie obozów i początek nowego piekła.
Spotkała tam Charles’a Oreste’a Paroldo z Tulonu, jeńca wojennego.
Pierwsze obozy koncentracyjne powstały z dala od Europy. Jaki był ich cel?

Wyzwolenie nazistowskich obozów. "Nie potrafiłam pojąć, po co przeżyłam"

Book Review: ‘The Holocaust: An Unfinished History’ by Dan Stone
By: Meir Y. Soloveichik Dan Stone’s The Holocaust: An Unfinished History is a book that is difficult to describe; indeed one might say that it is two books in one, a joining of scholarship and screed. One of these books, which comprises most of the pages of the volume, is an eloquent, invaluable, and heartbreaking history of the Holocaust that emphasizes often overlooked aspects of this utterly evil event.

Last year will likely go down as the moment that artificial intelligence came of age. In November 2022, OpenAI released the first iteration of its chatbot, ChatGPT. The world spent 2023 amazed by the potential of ChatGPT and grappling with its consequences. But, in the entertainment industry, the introduction of ChatGPT upended the 2023 collective bargaining negotiations between the major motion picture companies and the unions representing writers, directors and actors.
The Holocaust: An Unfinished History
Dan Stone, professor of modern history and director of the Holocaust Research Institute at Royal Holloway, University of London, has written in The Holocaust: An Unfinished History a groundbreaking study of the Shoah. Many historians have centered their Holocaust research solely on the rise of the Nazis in Germany under Adolf Hitler up to the actual physical destruction of 6 million Jews during World War II.
What we keep getting wrong about the Holocaust
The Holocaust: An Unfinished History By Dan Stone Mariner Books, 464 pages, $32.50 The biggest takeaway from Dan Stone's breathless, information-packed Holocaust history is that the subject is even messier and more complicated than we've come to believe. Stone, professor of modern history and director of the Holocaust Research Institute at the University of London, concedes that the literature of the Holocaust is so vast and variegated that no one person could possibly master it all.
Understanding the Jewish Catastrophe
A Review of The Holocaust: An Unfinished Historyby Dan Stone, 464 pages, Penguin Press (April 2024). There are many excellent books about the Holocaust. They range from classics like Raul Hilberg’s mammoth 1961 study, The Destruction of European Jews to the recently departed Arno Meyer’s 2012 book, Why Did the Heavens Not Darken? The “Final Solution” in History, and Saul Friedlander's two-volumeNazi Germany and the Jews (1988).

‘Bystander Society’ by Mary Fulbrook review
In 1939 three Harvard professors – Gordon Allport, a psychologist; Sydney B. Fay, a historian; and Edward Y. Hartshorne, a sociologist – ran an essay competition with the title ‘My life in Germany before and after January 30, 1933’. With a first prize of $500 – a substantial sum at the time – the competition attracted more than 250 entries. They were written between late summer 1939 and spring 1940, more than two-thirds of them by émigrés to the US, and most in German.

As a Christian pastor, part of the calling is to be aware of environmental and societal dangers that can harm or ensnare sheep under your care. You must know how to guide the flock away from dangers and be fully equipped to engage in rescue and deliverance of entangled sheep. One of the primary schemes often ensnaring innocent Christian believers is that of practiced rhetoric from well-versed scholars who tie partial truth to seemingly apparent positive outcomes.
Opinion: Cannabis business owners should negotiate labor peace agreements before signing
When you apply for a marijuana business license in California, one of the many documents you must sign is a sworn statement that your business will enter into a labor peace agreement, or LPA. Almost every licensed cannabis entrepreneur will eventually have to sign an LPA, which is a preliminary contract between your business and a labor union.
‘Brutal’ lessons of Holocaust exposed amid fears for crisis-hit Europe
And nearly 80 years on, the threat of genocide remains as the world faces multiple crises including the climate emergency and war in Ukraine. In an interview with the PA news agency, Prof Stone said: “Antisemitism remains a live issue. Racism is a live issue. “I think the fault lines that have been created in the world now will exacerbate those issues, particularly the climate emergency.

The story that won’t die
Do partners of the esteemed law firm Cravath, Swaine & Moore recite a culty ritual chant at their colleagues’ funerals? Yes, says an article that appeared in theFinancial Times on April 9, 2018: It was an amusing side note in a story about firm compensation models written by James Fontanella-Khan, Sujeet Indap, and Barney Thompson, but the paragraph went semi-viral. I first read it the next day in Matt Levine’s popular Bloomberg newsletter Money Stuff.

The New New York Review of Books
(For Part 1: Is it really the “New York Review of Each Other’s Books”?, click here.) Russell Jacoby was unpersoned by theNew York Review of Books. Admittedly, he first called the magazine stale. In his 1987 book The Last Intellectuals,Jacoby argued the NYRB had started off “buzz[ing] with energy and excitement.“ It had gone wrong, he claimed, by largely turning to established professors to write articles, especially from the Ivy League, Oxford, and Cambridge instead of fostering new talent.
A look at lengthening byline credits at the New York Times
A few years ago, I found myself looking at New York Times bylines a lot more. I couldn’t help it really. I was used to seeing a single line of type under each headline reading “By First Last.”1 Suddenly, or so it felt, every article was written by a team. The multi-bylines (as I’ll call them) took up more space and their visual novelty, more than anything, made me notice them. My impression was partially right, but not entirely.
Is it really the “New York Review of Each Other’s Books”?
Since its 1963 founding, the New York Review of Books has been considered a bit clubby. Richard Hofstadter’s quip that it ought to be called the “New York Review of Each Other’s Books” is the most enduring line on the topic.1 Using metadata from all 59 years of the NYRB archives—spanning some 1,228 issues containing 17,268 articles about 31,579 books—I measured just how much of a “Review of Each Other’s Books” it has been.2 In short, my view is that Hofstadter was right.
Money Stuff is Linear-ish
I recently spent a bit too much time trying to find out when a man in Brooklyn presses a button.1 His name is Matt Levine, and he writes a popular daily finance newsletter for Bloomberg called Money Stuff. He’s known for his incisive and humorous commentary on Wall Street, which makes complex concepts accessible to non-experts while remaining relevant to a large audience of industry insiders. I’ve now subscribed to Money Stuff for six years and noticed it comes out later than it once did.
Sown of Salt and Wind
This article first appeared in the February 2022 issue of Adventure Cyclist magazine. By the time my dad dropped Dan and me off in front of the blue house on Cherry Street in Woodward, Oklahoma, for the start of our four-day bike tour, the temperature had already tipped past the 100°F mark. I crossed my fingers that my self-made route wouldn’t be as desolate and brutal as the weather.

Dan Stone In Review: Ride Concepts Flat Pedal Shoe As the coolest kid on the block atop a cherry-red, fully-rigid Trek 800 mountain bike in the mid-90s (not that there were any mountains to ride in northwestern Oklahoma), I maintained a steady stream of cuts and bruises. It’s not that I was a daredevil but rather that I was (and am) a clumsy, long-legged mess, without grace, flexibility, or much bodily awareness. My mother’s one dead-if-you-break-it rule for bike riding: always wear sneakers.
What Is the Issue With the Term Genocide?
Shoes of Holocaust victims in Auschwitz, Poland on 11/29/2019. © Konoplytska / Shutterstock In the summer of 2021, genocide scholar Dirk Moses published an article in the Swiss online journal Geschichte der Gegenwart (History of the Present) titled, “The German Catechism.” He argued that Germany’s sense of its special obligation to Jews after the Holocaust has become a debilitating blockage to thinking through some of the most pressing issues of the present.

Anti-Vaxxers’ Trivialization Of The Holocaust Is Antisemitic
In June of this year, a British nurse, Kate Shemirani, was struck off for spreading misinformation about the covid-19 pandemic. The fact that a nurse was arguing that the illness was caused by 5G masts rather than the covid virus or that wearing face masks does not offer any protection was bad enough; but it is the manner in which she made her arguments that is of interest here.

Gabby Barrett is enjoying a third week in a row in the number-one spot with “The Good Ones.” She joins some pretty good company there – the last female artist to have 3 or more consecutive weeks in the top spot on the country music airplay chart was over a decade ago. Miranda Lambert’s “The House That Built Me” also achieved the feat back in 2010. Gabby’s run at number-1 follows her win earlier this month at the 56th Annual ACM Awards where she was named the New Female Artist of the Year.

Opinion | Why are half of the newly vaccinated people in D.C. younger than 44?
Dan Stone is a D.C. resident. Young people at low risk of having serious cases of coronavirus may be crowding out those at higher risk in D.C.'s vaccination program. In the past three weeks, as authorities have expanded vaccine eligibility to all adults with qualifying medical conditions, 49.5 percent of newly vaccinated D.C. residents have been age 44 and younger, a group that by any measure is least at risk of dying from the coronavirus.
What's a musician doing on Substack?
Substack has largely been thought of as a home for writers who want to go independent, but there’s a much more expansive constellation of creators who have come to the platform to publish their work and connect with their audiences. Here’s Thao describing her plans and motivation… What is a touring musician without a tour?
Your Political Counterparts Are Not Moral Monsters
Research shows we frequently underestimate the moral character of voters across the aisle In a 2017 survey, over 40 percent of both Democratic and Republican voters describe the other party as “downright evil.” While dehumanization of the opposition party is prima facie untrue at a literal level, are Republicans or Democrats justified in judging themselves morally superior to their counterparts? How would we even evaluate that?
