Perseid meteor shower peaks Monday night, Aug 12.
Aug 10, 2024 ESCANABA — A couple of nights ago, while taking a bag of trash out to the cart beside the garage, a flash of light lit up the sky to the northeast. Looking up, I saw a faint, gently glowing streak running down the sky alongside the Milky Way. I watched for several seconds as the train slowly faded away. Beginning back in mid-July, quietly and predictably, the Perseid meteor shower has been steadily building toward its peak on the night of Monday, August 12.

Outdoors Dan: Continue to be on the lookout in case deer have EHD
We have been seeing a deer walking in circles around Warren County. Have you heard anything about deer getting sick again? I spoke with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, and there was some suspicion of a couple epizootic hemorrhagic disease cases in Warren County and on the border of Clarke and Decatur counties two weeks ago. As of June 26, there were no new reported cases. However, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Missouri and Kansas have suspected cases.

Outdoors Dan: Why don't people talk about taking does?
Dan Young , Special to the Register Published 12:06 p.m. CT Aug. 7, 2019 Why do so many people not talk about taking does instead of antlered deer? The hunters in my circles and I always talk about taking does in the areas we hunt to practice good deer management. Doe tags are easily accessible in most units. They are also very tasty to consume. What light do you like to pack for hunting deer? I carry a couple headlamps from Cyclops called the 210 and HL500.

Outdoors Dan: What's the status of hunting season?
Dan Young, Special to the Register Published 9:53 a.m. CT March 25, 2020 I heard that Iowa was canceling hunting season this spring due to the coronavirus. Is this really true? No. The Iowa DNR has not suspended hunting or fishing seasons this year due to COVID-19. As a matter of fact, going outdoors and fishing or turkey hunting is a great way to do social distancing. Just wash your hands if you stop to fill up or pick up food as indicated by the president's commission.
Outdoors Dan: Making the case for an earlier Iowa archery season
Dan Young, Special to the Register Published 11:53 a.m. CT Nov. 20, 2018 Buy Photo Iowa Outdoors.(Photo: The Des Moines Register)Buy Photo I would like to know why archery season here doesn’t start in mid-September, like it does in other states. Is there a good reason for that? I would love to have the regular archery season start in mid-September. It would allow you to take a few more does and give you more of a chance to see bucks still in bachelor groups in their summer patterns.

Outdoors Dan: Will flooding affect pheasant and turkey numbers?
With all the flooding we have here in Iowa, do you think pheasant and turkey numbers have been affected? I don’t think so because a lot of areas were not affected like they were in 1993. The DNR will be starting to gather information here soon with the August Roadside Survey. That will be the best barometer of what to expect. I have been seen turkey poults with hens in the areas I hunt in southern Iowa. So I have my fingers crossed for everybody.

Outdoors Dan: How do we keep ticks off our kids?
We have found so many ticks on our kids this year already. The spray we bought isn’t working. What do you use? I do a couple things to keep ticks, chiggers and other pests off me. I wear Elimitick hunting clothes by Gamehide, which have a repellent bonded to the fabric. This won’t wash out and is safe to wear. I also spray Lethal Products Bug and Tick Spray on my hat, boots, camera bag and pack. This spray is scent free and is safe for the entire family.
Outdoors Dan: Looking for a tom? Try using a goose call.
Dan, what was the located call you talked about last Saturday on your radio program? Congrats on your two toms in Iowa. Thank you! I had a good bow season here at home with my Elite Ritual! On the located call, that was actually Jason Pollack from Lynch Mob Calls. Jason recommended carrying and using a goose call. Toms are not used to hearing that, and it shocks them to gobble really well. What was the brown/pumpkin tailed grubs you talked about for crappie?
Outdoors Dan: Bobbers for kids, broadheads for turkeys
What are doing for decoys? I can’t get a tom to decoy at all! Appreciate your column. Thank you! Turkeys have been tough and a little behind this season due to the weather. I have been using a jake decoy, an alert hen and a feeding hen. I have been putting them out at 12 yards. I have been calling at them as soon as I hear them on the roost. I got my first bird this Monday. I had four toms working, but the hens cut me off.
Outdoors Dan: On hunting crappie, turkeys and keeping the ticks away
1. Would you please recommend a good soft plastic choice for crappie? Sure, I like running soft plastics from Northland, Kalin and Berkley. I like Northland’s small spinners, Kalin’s 2-inch Lemon Meringue twist grubs, and Berkley’s Ripple Shads on a small spinner. All work well for slow to medium retrieves covering areas for crappie. 2. Dan, I have been out Turkey hunting and they are still hemmed up? What calls should I try this week? I would try calling a little more aggressively now.
Outdoors Dan: What hunting is truly about
Dan, I took my daughter out youth season and I failed miserably for her. I couldn’t call anything in for her. What do I need to call in with? I feel I’m horrible at making calls. Well, first off, I wouldn’t say you failed by any means. You took the time out to spend time with you daughter. Taking her hunting and building on those memories are what hunting is truly about and I call that a successful hunt.
Outdoors Dan: How to keep away bears while camping
Dan, we are going tent camping next month in Colorado. My wife is concerned about bears in the area. What should we take or do for safety in bear areas. She doesn’t want to take a firearm with us. Thanks for your help! That sounds like a fun trip! A couple quick suggestions for you. Always make sure you cook and store your food and trash away from your sleeping area. Plus, always clean up after a meal, including cooking skillets and utensils.
Outdoors Dan: Get the best out of open-water fishing tech
A question from my son: What electronics are the easiest for open-water fishing? He wants to get his dad one for Father’s Day. What a great gift for his father! There are several good choices out there. I actually bought a unit from Lowrance last spring. I got the Hook 5 model with Chirp sonar and down-scan that worked well for me. I called Lowrance with questions last year. Their customer service was very friendly and helpful.
Outdoors Dan: Here’s the key to quit fretting about fletchings
What causes fletchings to fall off my carbon arrows after I get my arrows done? I am going to start doing them myself — I’m sick of this! There could be a couple things. You should always wipe your arrows down with denatured alcohol to remove any excess carbon dust. You also want to do the same to the base of each fletch before applying fletching glue and putting your cane in the fletcher. Make sure your fletcher slots stay clean and free of glue as you fletch.
Outdoors Dan: Why we hunt coyotes, aim high with bows
Dan I was listening to you on WHO last week when you were interviewing a chef. What tool do you like for keeping your fillet knives sharp? Thanks for tuning in! The chef was Scott Leysath, the host of the “Sporting Chef” TV show. Scott and I were talking about filleting panfish while ice fishing. The tool we spoke about is the Work Sharp field sharpener. It not only keeps your knives sharp, it also helps keep your hooks sharp. You can find these sharpeners at Sportsman’s Warehouse.
Outdoors Dan: The difference in Crappie, tips on bow-hunting turkey
Dan, we have been out ice fishing catching Crappie. My son asked what kind of Crappie they were? How do you tell the difference between black or white Crappie? There are a couple different ways. Remember, during the spawn, males of both subspecies turn very black and can lose all their markings during different times of the year. For example, how clear the water is can affect their appearance.
Outdoors Dan: Identifying the greatest threat to U.S. hunting and fishing
My shoulder is gone, and I need to go to a crossbow. Which ones do you suggest I look at that are dependable? There are several good brands out there. I really like the CAMX made by The Outdoor Group for dependability and accurate shooting. You should also look at the Ravin crossbow, especially the Helicoil design. Either would be a good choice for you to check out. What do you think is the greatest threat to hunting or fishing?
Outdoors Dan: Time to think about managing coyote population
Is your wild game dinner still coming up? We have attended a few times and really enjoy it. The Beast Feast is actually coming up Jan. 19 at Stoney Creek Inn in Johnston. This dinner is one of my favorite things I get to do every year. It helps a lot of folks here in Iowa battling cancer while supporting the state’s chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. We will have moose, elk, bear, deer and waterfowl (and Chick-fil-A for the folks not brave enough to go wild).
Outdoors Dan: Layers of advice in this frigid cold
What do you to stay warm out there in this cold? I want to get my husband some good base layers. Please help! When it’s this cold, it can be a challenge to stay warm. I would recommend getting him a good Merino wool base layer, quality insulated bibs and a hunting coat. That will help him layer, and also cut the wind or cold. Try looking at Gamehide, Sitka and Whitewater for good clothing options. If he ground-blind hunts, a Mr. Buddy heater also helps a lot.
Outdoors Dan: Tips on removing the Y-bone on Northern pike
I am trying to hunt late season for deer. What should I focus on more: travel routes or food sources? Can I put up a blind now without scaring deer? That’s a great question. If it’s cold, like it is now, I would hunt a food source where the deer are entering off a main trail, if you have haven’t had a blind out for a couple weeks already so the deer have gotten used to it. I would try and build a natural ground blind 20-25 yards off their main trial of the food source.
Outdoors Dan: Ever wanted to try squirrel? Get some good recipes
My son and I have been hunting hard this year. We took two does in shotgun season while not pushing. Just didn’t see any big bucks. What’s your opinion on why? There could be a lot of reasons. It’s been so warm this season. There is a lot of browse plant for them to eat. If deer have food, water and cover in one area, they don’t have to move. I’m getting most of my pics of some mature bucks on camera at night, and not during the day. We are getting some colder weather moving in that should help.
Outdoors Dan: Deer numbers and turkey decoys
Dan, what is going on with the Iowa deer herd? This has been one of the worst seasons for our family seeing deer this year. Have people killed too many deer? I think the deer numbers are OK; I have been seeing a lot of deer where I hunt. They have just been younger deer and not a lot of 4 or 5 year olds. There are older deer in my area, but I have been seeing them on camera between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m. Remember areas or pockets of ground will have different numbers on them.
Outdoors Dan: Do your research on tracking devices
What are you seeing in the timber? I have been out a few times this week, I am only seeing yearlings and small bucks? Is the rut done? Activity is different this time or phase of the rut than early November. There will be does still coming into estrus that were born later, or that didn’t get bred. I am seeing small year and half to two year old still looking. The big mature bucks have been locked up with does were I am hunting.
Outdoors Dan: Don’t have a mix-up on mixed-color deer
I saw someone shot a patch-colored deer in Iowa. Is it legal to shoot a mixed-color deer in Iowa? There are deer that can be mostly white or have patches to them. There are called piebald deer, and according to Iowa code 481A.124, it is illegal to shoot one unless it’s less than 50 percent white. I want to know how many different calls a turkey can make. We were hunting and heard a few making some we never heard before.
Outdoors Dan: All about archery, from youths to adults
I am looking for a bow suitable for my granddaughter to start with. For myself, I am looking at a pair of hunting boots suitable for the fall. Any recommendations? There a quite a few bow options for your granddaughter to choose from, including some that come with kits. I would suggest you take her to Archery Field and Sports or Sportsman’s Warehouse and get her draw length measured. Then let her shoot a couple from Elite, Bear, and Bowtech to see which one feels the best for her.
Outdoors Dan: Good grunts, securing Allen screws
Dan what do you use for a grunt to get a buck to respond? I usually try to stay quiet and only grunt if I see a deer leaving my area. I use a short grunt at first, then a longer grunt or roar to simulate a buck breeding. I try to throw a doe grunt in the sequence also. This has worked well for me in the past. Just remember every deer will react differently to your calls. It’s been really slow in my area. I hear about others having a lot of action, why is that?
Outdoors Dan: Proper safety in deer stands, best gear for photography
In retirement I've taken up wildlife photography and I'd like to get some good shots of bucks in Iowa. . I have some camo wear but no scent blockers and I don't own a blind. What basic gear should I have and what techniques I should use in locating deer? Sounds like you’re having fun in retirement! I would just get yourself some quality camouflage like Elimitick from Gamehide. They have insect shield built into the fabric so you’re protected from ticks and chiggers.
Outdoors Dan: How to keep deer off your scent
Can we carry a handgun while hunting in Iowa? There are some scary things out by where I hunt and need to know. If you have a valid carry permit in the state of Iowa, you can carry a handgun while bowhunting. This rule was approved during the 2017 Iowa legislative session. Hunters, however, cannot use the handgun to take the deer during the Oct. 1-Dec. 1 part of the archery season. I sure hope a lot of folks around here know what you do for vets and for kids battling cancer every year.
Outdoors Dan: Get a glue clue to fix what bugs you
Can you recommend a good arrow glue? I’m really ticked I have fletched two dozen arrows with some glue I had last season. All the fletching is coming off. What works for me is to wipe down all my arrows with denatured alcohol to remove any excess carbon. I also clean all my nitro vane bases before I fletch them. Then I use a fresh tube of instant glue from Pine Ridge Archery. This method works really well, and I hardly lose fletchings even after getting a pass-through on game.
Outdoors Dan: Listen up for proper ear protection
What do you know about or recommend for ear protection gear? What are some of the best options for shooting while hunting? I always wear hearing protection when using a gun. I use Walker’s Game ear products, like the behind-the-ear type HD Pro Elites that shut down at percussion of the gun. If I am just shooting at the range, I love the comfort and performance of the quad muffs. Just remember, once you have hearing damage or loss, it’s irreversible.
Outdoors Dan: Doe recipes, stand advice and cold-weather clothing
Is there a limit on doe tags you can by as a resident in Iowa? What are some of your favorite doe recipes? The only limit is availability in the county you’re hunting. As long as there is available tags you should be good to go. I love “sloppy doe” sandwiches. Take 1 pound of ground venison in a large pan with some olive oil and cook until it's slightly brown.
Outdoors Dan: Baiting no-nos, and some so-so bows
Is it legal to hunt by a mineral block in Iowa? We found one by a stand right off our property and would like to know. No, it’s not legal to hunt over a mineral block or in the vicinity of one in the state of Iowa to attract deer. It’s considered baiting deer.
Outdoors Dan: Decoys, scents in efforts to lure deer
What do you think about using a deer decoy early season in a bean field? I am limited to one area for a stand for tree options. Will this work? If I were you, I would just use a ground blind and really brush it in well near where the deer are entering the field a few weeks before you hunt. Deer react differently toward a decoy. I have had deer totally avoid them. I have also had decoys work in pre-rut and rut in late October and November. When is the deadline for your Kansas deer hunt contest?
Outdoors Dan: Rib tips and deer blinds and bear scares, oh my!
How do you prepare, and how long do you cook, your ribs in your smoker? And at what temperature? After I rub my ribs down with Cookies Flavor Enhancer, I like to cook my ribs bone-side down in my Camp Chef pellet smoker at 250 degrees. I usually take them off after a couple hours, or when they reach an internal temp of 180 degrees.
Outdoors Dan: Get set for squirrels, and beginners’ bows
I heard you talk about squirrel recipes. I am taking my daughter this year with my 20-gauge. When does season start, and where do we set up in the woods? Squirrel season starts Sept. 2 in Iowa. It’s a great way to take kids out and teach them woodsmanship. My favorite way to hunt them is in the early morning around hickory or oak trees. If you sit or lean against a tree and listen, you should hear them cutting nuts up in the trees. Just slowly approach, and wait for a clear shot.
Outdoors Dan: Considering the effective range on elk
Dan, I am wondering, what is your effective range on elk with your bow? I heard you say you will be sitting on Wallows in Colorado in late August? I shoot my Elite every day with my Broadheads on this time of year. I shoot Magnus Stingers, which are a fixed blade head that cuts on contact and is extremely accurate. I can hold a tennis-ball-size group with them up to 50 yards. My comfort level on elk really depends on the terrain, how the elk is moving and cover it's in.
Outdoors Dan: Taking a youngster's question, discussing kids' hunting contest
Outdoors Dan, I am 9 years old and I really like your programs. You're funny and nice and my mom likes me to listen. Why do deer eyes shine at night? Well, thanks for listening and tell your mom thanks! Deer eyes are specially designed so they can see better at night than we can. They have a really thin layer of special cells behind their retina that helps reflect light.
“Yahoo! Answers for Great American Poets
Q: Help! My girlfriend ate all the plums I’d been saving! I was standing in the produce section when it hit me. Nobody eats plums anymore! Am I right? When was the last time someone offered you a plum? Said, “Hey William, do you want a plum? These ones are fresh. They’ve been in the fridge for a week. That’s how long most plums take to ripen. One week. Mmmm. So I bought some. Six to be precise. I put them in the fruit drawer of the refrigerator.
Outdoors Dan: Calling out for a good elk cow sound
Can you recommend a good elk cow call that is easy to use? I can't seem to master the diaphragm ones. There are some really good calls out there that are easy to use. The ones you squeeze with your hand sound OK. There are also ones that you bite and exhale to make the call, and reed-type calls. I am using a reed style call, and a bite-and-blow type this season in Colorado. What are your thoughts on hunting deeper timber stands early in the year for evening sits?
Outdoors Dan: In the weeds on walleye
What do you suggest for fishing for walleye in weedy areas? They are driving me nuts trying slip bobbers and crankbaits! I have been trying a few different things for walleyes myself this summer — from Lindy Rigs with leeches, Bottom Bouncers with minnows, to jigs on drop-offs, and finally back trolling Flicker Shads that have only caught a few. The next time I go out, I am going to start fishing the weed lines more.
Outdoors Dan: Scoping out the best outdoors equipment isn’t easy
I want a scope for a .22-caliber rifle. What do you suggest? I love shooting a .22, whether it’s for target or squirrel hunting in the fall. There are several great models made just for a .22. I like several from Alpen Optics, Nikon and Leupold. You want to match the performance of a .22 rifle and its full potential. The rifle should be matched with a well-made scope. Some of the best .22 scopes for your rifle should feature about a 1-inch tube, in addition to being nitrogen-purged and O-ring sealed.
Outdoors Dan: How to cook your deer steaks
Dan, when you are cooking deer steaks, what is the internal temp you cook them too? I like to cook my deer steaks and chops to an internal temperature of 140 degrees for a medium rare level. I always season them with Cookies Flavor Enhancer, and a chipotle rub on each side. You don't want to overcook venison because it's so lean. I heard you talking about shooting fingers when you started bow hunting. I am thinking about that also.
Outdoors Dan: How to hunt on a budget from fall to spring
We went looking for some new ground to hunt this fall. The land is getting too expensive for us to rent anymore for hunting. What can a family do if it’s on a tight budget? Have you looked at the Iowa Habitat and Access Program that the DNR offers? I believe they have more than 20,000 private acres open for public hunting in exchange for the DNR to help improve the habitat. This is a free program starting Sept. 1 through the spring turkey season that runs until May 31.
