Queensland reveals third Youth Justice and Victim Support boss

Michael Drane has been named director-general of the Department of Youth Justice and Victim Support. Drane has been acting in the role since January, after his two predecessors departed to serve as children’s commissioner. Minister for Youth Justice and Victim Support and Minister for Corrective Services Laura Gerber said the appointment gives the department strong and stable leadership.

Whitehall review details lands ahead PM’s departure

Keir Starmer has announced the details of a sweeping review of Whitehall, as one of his last acts as UK prime minister. Originally announced in January, the review will follow similar contours to David Thodey’s independent review of the APS, focusing on “organisation, performance, and transformation”. Unlike the Thodey review, it will be run internally by Cabinet Secretary and Head of the Civil Service Antonia Romeo.

Scope creep is straining Tasmania Police resources, according to an independent review of the state’s frontline policing. The number of police dispatches grew by 40,000 per annum over the past decade, reaching 138,756 in 2023-24. While headcount rose from 1,511 to 2,130 over the same period, widening police responsibilities and growing community expectations are straining resources. Family violence incidents have increased by 250% over the past decade, from 1,582 to 5,856.
