What’s in a name?
What’s in a name? Our St. Joe’s community is figuring out what to call our new residence building. Many call it “Sister Thea,” while others call it “Bowman Hall.” “Sister Thea” is how many addressed the scholar, evangelist and spiritual leader, Sister Thea Bowman, Ph.D., the patron of our newest Hawk Hill residence hall.

Just4Kids: If our eyes see upside down, how does the brain flip the picture?
I heard that we see upside down, but our brain flips the image. How does it do that? – Jasmine, Mount Evelyn, Victoria Our eyes work thanks to light. Objects we can see are either sources of light themselves – like a candle or a phone screen – or light bounces off them and makes its way to our eyes. First, light passes through the optical components of the eyes such as the cornea, pupil and lens.

Do Eyes Really See The World Upside Down? Here's The Science.
Our eyes work thanks to light. Objects we can see are either sources of light themselves – like a candle or a phone screen – or light bounces off them and makes its way to our eyes. First, light passes through the optical components of the eyes such as the cornea, pupil and lens. Together, they help focus the light onto the retina that senses light, while also controlling the intensity of light to help us see well while avoiding damage to the eye.

Plant-Based Meat Alternatives: Are They Part of the Future of Healthy Eating?
By Daniel Joyce Peer Reviewed I vividly recall my first Impossible Whopper at Burger King after its introduction to the menu in 2019. As I bit down, my taste buds recognized the similarity immediately. Was it the exact same thing? No, but it was pretty darn close. Plant-based meats have received growing praise in the US, particularly due to their role as sustainable, ethical, and tasty alternatives to meat consumption.

The multiple materialisms of international law
The field of (critical) international law seems to be having a materialist moment. Classic themes on international law’s structural indeterminacy,1 cultural hierarchies,2 or the political possibilities of its historical contingencies3 are increasingly questioned by accounts that trace the discursive operations, dynamics of difference or patterns of (dis)continuity in international law to their material foundations.
Effect of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus and Immunosuppressive Agents on COVID‐19 Vaccination Antibody Response
INTRODUCTION Both systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) itself and the use of some immunosuppressants may impact the risk of COVID-19 (1-3). In particular, corticosteroids and B cell–depleting biologics such as rituximab impair vaccine response (4-6). SLE increases the risk of severe COVID-19 (hospitalization, intensive care unit stay, or intubation) both before and after vaccination (7).

Effect of Systemic Lupus and Immunosuppressives on COVID Vaccination Antibody Response
Abstract Objective The risk of COVID-19 infection is increased in SLE vs non-SLE. Some immunosuppressive medications increase COVID infection and decrease the efficacy of vaccination. Consensus documents have suggested management strategies on handling immunosuppressive medications to increase vaccine efficacy, but the benefit of such strategies has not been proven. Methods We collected information on COVID infection, vaccination history, and COVID antibodies in the Hopkins Lupus Cohort.
Optimizing Light Flash Sequence Duration to Shift Human Circadian Phase
Abstract : Simple Summary Information about light exposure patterns is integrated across time and space in retinal circuits before being passed to downstream hypothalamic targets, including the circadian pacemaker in the suprachiasmatic nuclei. In multiple mammalian species, these circuits can integrate brief flashes of light such that the effective impact on the circadian pacemaker is greater than that of continuous light of similar intensity.
Comparative cost‐effectiveness of neoadjuvant chemotherapy regimens for muscle‐invasive bladder cancer: Results according to VESPER data
ORIGINAL ARTICLE The first two authors contributed equally to this article. Abstract Background The VESPER trial demonstrated improved progression-free (PFS) and (preliminarily) overall survival (OS) with six cycles of neoadjuvant dose-dense methotrexate, vinblastine, doxorubicin, and cisplatin (ddMVACx6) versus four cycles of gemcitabine and cisplatin (GCx4) before radical cystectomy (RC) for muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC), but with increased toxicity.
Biologically Relevant Lighting: An Industry Perspective
Introduction The discovery of a novel Intrinsically Photosenstive Retinal Ganglion Cell (ipRGC) in the eye has changed our understanding of the role of light in our everyday lives (Provencio and Foster, 1995; Provencio et al., 1998; Brainard et al., 2001; Thapan et al., 2001; Berson et al., 2002; Panda et al., 2002; Dacey et al., 2005; Güler et al., 2008; Hughes et al., 2016). These ipRGCs contain a photopigment melanopsin with an in-vitro spectral sensitivity around 480 nm.
Pope’s ‘Year of St. Joseph’ should have special meaning in Philadelphia | Opinion
It makes a world of difference to us all that in the weeks leading up to Christmas Pope Francis surprised us with his proclamation of the “Year of Saint Joseph.” Joseph, the father of Jesus of Nazareth, is the most understated figure of the Christmas story, and yet for Christians he plays a pivotal role in bringing salvation to the whole world.

Chaos or the beloved community?
Choosing the faith that MLK advocated This week is a good time for the Saint Joseph’s University community to ask ourselvesif we will collude with the powers of chaos or if we will instead draw upon the ancient gift of hope in the beloved community?

Intravesical formalin for hemorrhagic cystitis: A contemporary cohort
Introduction: Hemorrhagic cystitis presents a difficult clinical challenge, yet data regarding treatment options is sparse. Here, we sought to evaluate outcomes of a contemporary cohort of patients treated with intravesical formalin for hemorrhagic cystitis. Methods: We identified a retrospective cohort of eight patients managed with formalin for hemorrhagic cystitis from 2000?2014. All patients failed prior measures, including bladder irrigation, clot evacuation, and other intravesical agents.
Death of Osama Bin Laden: Facts, Narrative, Law
It is said in the domestic practice of law that the facts are sometimes more important than the law. Advocates often win and lose cases on their facts, despite the perception that the law’s formalism and abstraction are to blame for its failures with regards to delivering justice. In the realm of international law again facts are surprisingly significant, and yet often hard to come by.
Message received, so let's start on those knots
I'd had a knot in my stomach long before Pope Francis landed in Philadelphia. My great fear was that folks in the United States would not receive his message. He seemed totally unfamiliar with the American scene, and any foreigner would find the complexity of our politics and culture wars labyrinthine, let alone a 78-year-old Jesuit who, prior to 2013, spent little time outside Argentina. I was all tied up for no reason.
