No quick fixes coming for US Open's late nights
This U.S. Open has had its share of controversies, from misbehaving influencers to marijuana smoke wafting over the courts. No incident sparked conversation within the sport quite like the 3:33 a.m. finish time of Ben Shelton's epic five set win against defending champion Carlos Alcaraz.
Growing pains aside, 'RedZone at the US Open' is a match made in heaven for tennis junkies Original
At the dawn of the streaming revolution in the 2010s, certain sports stood to benefit right away. Tennis was and is one of them. Before streaming, broadcasters would have at times dozens of matches to choose from and only one screen. Fans were at the mercy of the producer in a truck. Now at the U.S. Open, like most other pro events, all 16 courts are streamed. So it makes sense that ESPN is deploying RedZone at the U.S. Open as its first use outside the NFL.
'Textbook enshittification' Original
Say you own a house, and local zoning officials deploy a new regulation that would cause you and your neighbors to spend tens of thousands of dollars to comply. Some of your neighbors do so, and some delay, hoping the regulation is lifted. And that's indeed what happens months later, so some, not all, homeowners spent money for nothing.

Disney makes major ESPN announcement
Walt Disney disclosed on its earnings call this morning that its Super Bowl ad inventory is sold out, which is ahead of the pace of recent years when sales bled into the season. Fox two years ago put the sold out sign up in November, whereas CBS Sports for the Seahawks 2026 win over the New England Patriots sold out around the start of that season. Disney executives did not disclose what the average price is for a typical 30-second spot, though reports have pegged as much as $9-10 million per ad .
PTPA threatens defamation lawsuit against Andy Roddick's 'Served' podcast in newly surfaced letter Original
The embattled Professional Tennis Players Association earlier this year strongly hinted it would bring a defamation claim against Andy Roddick's podcast, Served, if it persisted in its reporting on the PTPA, or in fact ran with a story, which has not been published, at least yet. The PTPA hired Clare Locke, a top defamation law firm known for its muscular approach to the media, to send the correspondence to the podcast.

Is Ryan Clark laying the groundwork for a lawsuit against ESPN?
Credit: Eric Hartline-Imagn Images Of all the accusations, bad blood, harsh words, and nastiness thrown around last week following Ryan Clark's swift ejection from his perch at ESPN, the former Steeler's depiction of his removal as not a layoff is likely the one with staying power, as it would appear to be setting him up to sue his ex-employer.
Packers' financials signal ESPN equity stake potentially a nine-figure boon for NFL teams Original
This week, the sports media world gasped as layoffs hit high-profile names across ESPN, including at NFL Network and the show NFL Live. But while ESPN may be cost-cutting in the wake of its January 31 acquisition of NFL Network and RedZone, its counterparty is rolling in it. The NFL exchanged those two media assets (plus its fantasy football platform) for 10 percent of ESPN, and that deal is already boosting the bottom lines of its teams.
Andy Roddick's Wimbledon analysis proves it's time for the McEnroe era at ESPN to end Original
As ESPN wrapped up its Wimbledon coverage on Sunday, host Malika Andrews asked Andy Roddick some questions about the sport's future. The questions and answers aren't that important-whether Serena will play the U.S. Open, whether Carlos Alcaraz will return, and whether anyone can beat Jannik Sinner. What jumped out to me is that as she queried him, he took notes.

House Judiciary report could be toughest blow to NFL's antitrust defense yet Original
The NFL has long defended Sunday Ticket's pricing and structure as reasonable because the league contends it is a premium product geared toward avid fans. Avid here means the fan is an NFL junkie, interested in all of the league's games, not just a displaced Dallas Cowboys booster located outside of the team's broadcast zone, only interested in Dallas' games.

NBC's Upfront made sports an afterthought; Fox made it the main event Original
With Fox and NBCUniversal, it was the tale of two Upfronts on Monday, at least as it came to sports. The annual carnival of media companies pitching their content to ad buyers has long been a major event on the Madison Avenue calendar, and increasingly on the sports one too (NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is expected at Disney's upfront later today).
ESPN yet to open new rights negotiations with NFL Original
The Walt Disney Company has yet to start negotiations with the NFL on re-opening their media contracts, even as the league is keen on redoing all of its deals that were originally inked in 2021 for over $100 billion, and which went into effect with the 2023 season. Since, the NBA inked media deals worth $75 billion, strongly suggesting the NFL's contracts were underpriced given football's far stronger audience metric than basketball's.
Can MLB evade antitrust push into sports broadcasting? Original
Last month arrived the news that the Department of Justice is examining the NFL and MLB - and one might presume other sports leagues - for potential antitrust violations in how their teams collectively sell and structure media deals. This is the next logical step in the percolating frustration of many sports fans over their teams' games being stretched and spread over so many outlets.
