Daniel Mason’s ‘Country People’: A Whimsical Expedition
An academic Californian family relocates to Vermont, and charming oddness ensues. There’s a common belief that urban dwellers have an incomplete or romanticized picture of country life. The gap likely comes from real structural differences in daily routines, economic pressures, infrastructure, and social norms that are hard to fully grasp without living them.
Review: Pulitzer finalist’s latest is ‘Country People’
Daniel Mason fans know what to expect from his new novel: the unexpected. Mason’s last book, “North Woods,” set on the same spot in Massachusetts over the course of about 400 years, was my favorite fiction of 2023. It’s absolutely nothing like Mason’s Pulitzer Prize finalist story collection, “A Registry of My Passage Upon the Earth,” which echoes the fantastic tales of O.

In that sense, his latest book, COUNTRY PEOPLE, marks a considerable departure. What remains consistent in this charming, wry domestic comedy is Mason's talent for creating memorable and deeply sympathetic characters and the eloquent prose that contributes to a consistently enjoyable reading experience.

Along for the ride are her children, 12 and nine, and her husband, floundering PhD student Miles Krzelewski, who has made zero progress on his literature dissertation.

Meet the artist aiming to preserve Salford pubs with his artwork
A Salford artist has been painting pubs in Salford in the hope of capturing and preserving public houses in his own expressionistic style. The artist, Andrew Alan Matthews, wants to commemorate historic Salford pubs as he feels that too many are being demolished to make way for new builds. I spoke to Andrew at the Dover Inn, a pub he’s lived near for 18 years and one he has also painted. “This is an iconic pub, it has stood the test of time and the pandemic,” he remarked.

I interviewed her for my forthcoming book on intuition, and she then interviewed moi on her podcast, Voices in the River, which is medicinal and mindblowing. Cards from my year ahead reading with Rebecca. Pls send help in June and July.

Shelf Awareness for Readers for Friday, September 22, 2023
We review a pair of star-worthy history titles this week: Bartleby and Me by Gay Talese, who takes readers from his days as copyboy at the New York Times to a Sinatra concert--three pieces in all, "written with painterly precision and respect for hard workers"; and Scott Shane's Flee North, the "riveting account" of Thomas Smallwood, a freedman who helped other enslaved people escape.
The Iliad

Now Wilson has returned with an equally revelatory translation of Homer’s other great epic―the most revered war poem of all time.

NORTH WOODS | Kirkus Reviews
Intelligent and thoughtful but not quite at this groundbreaking writer’s usual level of excellence. An obscure English novelist and a missing-heir trial are the real historical springboards for Smith’s latest fiction. Eliza Touchet is cousin and housekeeper to William Ainsworth, whose novel Jack Sheppard once outsold Oliver Twist but who, by 1868, has been far eclipsed by his erstwhile friend Dickens. Widower William is about to marry his maid Sarah Wells, who has borne him a child.

Want a great fall read? Check out 'North Woods'
The main character of "North Woods," it must be said, is wooden. But that's because it's a house. The conceit of Daniel Mason's novel is that it's the history of a Massachusetts home. We meet it in the 17th century, when its single room is built, and move toward the present, as it is added onto, subtracted from, caved in, abandoned and — most of the time — cherished.
