What Danny Meyer Can’t Live Without
If you’re like us, you’ve probably wondered what everyday stuff famous people add to their carts — like mascara or a sleep mask. We asked Danny Meyer, the chef, restaurateur, and author of the just-published What Could Possibly Go Right?, about the reading glasses, wine-foil cutter, and fried peanuts he can’t live without. New! You can now save this product for later. $12 I stopped drinking drip coffee about three and a half years ago.
WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO RIGHT?
The noted restaurateur recounts a life in food and the principles that drive him. By Meyer’s count, he’s opened 27 restaurants, 10 now extinct. He also founded Shake Shack, “seven hundred locations across twenty-four countries, with many more on the horizon.” Those numbers are staggering, given how many franchise restaurants and chains have closed or trimmed down since the Great Recession and the Covid-19 pandemic.

Investing In Our Future
A feeling of sadness engulfed my colleagues and I on the final day of a youth programme at Otjimbingwe this week. Working with 29 youngsters over the three days was both inspirational and energising in equal ways. It is difficult to comprehend how they gained so much confidence to blossom over such a short period of time. This homegrown programme’s aim is to ignite an entrepreneurial spirit and thus encourage young Namibians to explore venturing into business as a career option.
The Power of Compound Interest
The phenomenal growth over the past decade in two of Namibia’s business sub-sectors is impressive measured by any standard: cash loans and gaming, a more polite description of gambling. These two business-types are now visible in even the smallest villages of Namibia’s 14 administrative regions. There is a belief that the growth of cash loan entities is due to many Namibians living far above their means.
Lessons For Entrepreneurs
Always in search of the perfect holiday read, it was while browsing the shelves of a favourite bookshop that the book ‘My Fat Greek Taverna’ by Costa Ayiotis caught my eye. The subtitle ‘from diplomacy to ouzo’ sets the scene for what readers can expect. I must admit reading is a passion and bookshops attract me like a magnet. Considering the time spent in bookshops over the years when we were on annual family holidays, unsurprisingly this frequently caused much annoyance to Thea and our children.

Rule Breaker Investing Reading List
Last year I decided to rewind the clock and return to 2015 through the lens of the RBI podcast. Going through the catalog taught me a lot about investing, life, and myself. Additionally, I’ve been exposed to new ways of thinking from listening to a diverse group of authors interviewed on the podcast. This group includes several best-sellers and also titles you may not know. There are 34 author interviews in total. I included the book they discussed on the podcast and the author.
Super Bowl? Super Bacon! Bacon makes everything better
There is a simple way to make food fit for a Super Bowl party: Take any appetizer you like, and then add bacon. Do you enjoy guacamole? Add bacon. Pigs in blankets? Pigs in bacon blankets are better. And if you happen to have dates lying around that have been stuffed with thin pieces of Parmesan cheese, by all means wrap them with bacon.

Wine-Braised Veal Shanks Recipe
Preheat the oven to 325°. Heat the oil in a large enameled cast-iron casserole. Season the veal shanks with salt and pepper and cook over moderately high heat until well browned, about 4 minutes per side. Transfer to a plate. Add the bacon and butter to the casserole and cook over low heat until the bacon fat has been rendered, about 3 minutes. Add the onion, carrot, celery, shallots and garlic and cook, stirring, until softened but not browned, about 5 minutes.
Watch a Day in the Life of Gramercy Tavern
The team from Gramercy Tavern just put together a book promo that shows a day in the life of the restaurant. In the clip, you see the chefs going to the greenmarket, the butchers preparing the meat, the pastry department making the bread, the staff having its pre-shift meeting, Roberta Bendavid arranging the flowers, and the crew during the middle of service. Chef Michael Anthony narrates. Here's the short, sweet little movie:
