A couple of beloved Winnipeg Jets might just end up on the TSN Trade Bait list - Article - BARDOWN
BarDown Staff (Photo by Darcy Finley/NHLI via Getty Images) Right now, it’s usually about time that we’d start to see NHL players head to their respective training camps and start gearing up for the season. Of course, this season is unlike any other before it, and we’re still in the thick of the Stanley Cup Playoffs as a result of the pause in the season caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. That delay also meant that every aspect of the season was delayed, which includes any off-season roster moves.
Blake Wheeler explained the strange way he found out about the NBA suspending play
The NBA rocked the sports world last night after the league announced it would be suspending play for the rest of the regular season in response to Jazz big man getting diagnosed with Coronavirus. Some professional athletes found out about the news right away but some, well, they were still on the job. Let's shift over to the NHL, where the Edmonton Oilers hosted the Winnipeg Jets on Wednesday night. Some players heard about the news mid-game but some didn't exactly receive the message.
Evander Kane lashes out at Department of Player Safety after latest suspension
Evander Kane is no stranger to suspensions. He’s been forced to sit out a number of times in response to questionable plays, some of which are very blatant. Saying that, it doesn’t mean he should be treated differently than others. Sure, his suspensions may become longer based on how many times he repeats, but if he gets suspended for a play you’d expect other players to get suspended for the same play too. In Kane’s eyes, that’s not exactly the way things are happening.
Marc-Andre Fleury unleashed the Halloween costume of the year and we can't stop laughing
We’ve seen a lot of great Halloween costumes so far this season, but Marc-Andre Fleury may have taken the cake with his wife Veronique Larosee. The two dressed up as a couple of Addams Family characters and while Veronique was somewhat recognizable, her husband didn’t quite look like himself. Actually, he kind of looked like the bottom part of a Mop. The 34-year-old dressed up as Cousin Itt and it left us crying of laughter.

Hayes’ rights were acquired by the Flyers weeks ago (for a fifth rounder from the Jets) but he didn’t technically have to re-sign in Philly and reports leaked that the Flyers weren’t initially on the top of his list.
Prospect Need to Know: The best of Traverse City
Our prospect expert headed to Northern Michigan to watch some of the top prospects from eight different NHL teams square off against each other. Find out which players caught his eye On the weekend, I attended the Traverse City Prospects Tournament in Michigan, where eight NHL teams got a chance to see what some of their top youngsters could do. This year in particular, there was a ton of high-end talent and thanks to several NHL rebuilds, every franchise had at least one high-end player.
Cody Eakin roasted Patrik Laine with a hilarious chirp involving his NHL 19 rating on Twitter
EA Sports did a pretty big solid for Patrik Laine in their newest NHL video game. Slowly but surely, the company has released a series of player ratings, and yesterday it was Laine’s turn to shine. The Finn revealed on Twitter that he was awarded an 89, and asked his followers on social media what they thought. But surely enough, the conversation quickly became about Laine’s beard, and how it looks wayyyyyy better than what he rocked during the regular season.
Hellebuyck signing another instance of Jets building long-term contender the right way
Winnipeg may not be the most attractive free agent destination, but Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff has turned it into a place players don’t want to leave by building a winner with potential for short- and long-term success. When the Atlanta Thrashers moved to Winnipeg seven years ago, GM Kevin Cheveldayoff knew the challenge he was facing. Yeah, it gets cold there in the winter, an average of minus-18 Celsius in the month of January. So you’ll need a block heater for the truck.
Predators build yellow brick wall, stifle Jets to turn Round 2 into best-of-three
The Predators smothered the Jets' offense through the neutral zone and the commitment to team defense saw Nashville recapture home-ice advantage in what has now become a best-of-three between the West's best. It was ugly, it was disjointed and it was a battle of will over skill.
3 rookies who NHL fans might agree got snubbed of a Calder Trophy nomination
The NHL has finally released its three Calder Trophy nominees. After intense anticipation, New York Islanders forward Mathew Barzal, Vancouver Canucks forward Brock Boeser and Arizona Coyotes forward Clayton Keller have been named the top three rookies of the year. Each player had standout seasons, however, some fans might agree others were more deserving of one of the three spots. With that in mind, here are four rookies who hockey fans might agree got snubbed of a Calder nomination.
Connor Hellebuyck set an incredible record in the Jets' final game of the regular season
It was a regular season to remember for Winnipeg Jets goaltender Connor Hellebuyck. After the organization signed Steve Mason to a two-year $8.2 million contract last summer, the Jet’s spot in the crease seemed to be up in the air. The contract appeared to spark a fire in Hellebuyck, though, who responded with what was easily the best campaign of his career.
Power Rankings: High-flying Jets set franchise records and clinch playoff berth
The Winnipeg Jets have rattled off six straight victories en route to setting a pair of franchise records and earning their first playoff berth since 2014-15. No team has risen as fast as the St. Louis Blues over the past week, though. So what have we learned in the past two weeks? Well, we’ve learned that the Winnipeg Jets can win. We’ve learned that they can win at home. We’ve learned that they can win even when it takes more than 60 minutes and they can find ways to win.

Hutchinson's delayed flight forces Winnipeg Jets to sign emergency backup goalie
Steve Mason returned to the Winnipeg Jets’ lineup earlier this week after missing nearly two months due to a concussion and posted a 31-save shutout in his return, but now it looks like the 29-year-old is going to miss some more time in the near future. With Mason suffering an injury during the team’s morning skate on Thursday, the Jets were forced to recall Michael Hutchinson to serve as Connor Hellebuyck’s backup for Thursday’s tilt with the New Jersey Devils.
Blues GM Armstrong should be applauded for boldly moving Stastny now to help St. Louis later
The Blues could have attempted to buy and in an attempt to win a playoff round, but St. Louis GM Doug Armstrong saw more problems than answers and made a choice to sell Paul Stastny to better his team's future.
A new unique prop bet surprisingly involves Tom Brady and the Vegas Golden Knights
The Super Bowl is the time of the year for families and friends to come together and enjoy five hours of pure entertainment. But for the die-hards, it presents an opportunity to capitalize on some obscure prop bets. Every year, a few remain the same. The colour of the Gatorade that’s poured on the winning coach, the length of the American National anthem, and the final score usually stand as three of the most popular.
Winning in Winnipeg: How high can the Jets fly?
Winnipeg's top-scoring offense, rock-solid goaltending and near-automatic power play has propelled them to the top of the league. So, are these Jets the real deal? A few days into the season, following respective 7-2 and 6-3 losses at the hands of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Calgary Flames, there was a certain here-we-go-again feeling around the Winnipeg Jets.
Leafs' Babcock: Bye week 'wrong for player safety'
TORONTO — Mike Babcock is no fan of the NHL's newly created bye week. Speaking a day before his Maple Leafs get their first taste of the mandated five-day break, Toronto's head coach said the concept worked counter to what it was supposed to accomplish — namely offering players a break from the grind of an 82-game season. "I think it's 100 per cent wrong for player safety," Babcock said ahead of a Saturday tilt with the Montreal Canadiens.
