Government right to reverse the decision to postpone these local elections

The fundamental principle of democracy is that people get to regularly express their view on the politicians who make decisions that affect them. So it is welcome that the government has today reversed the decision to postpone elections in 30 councils, which would have seen millions of people a vote in May. The postponements were prompted by the government’s re-organisation of local councils, which will see the two-tier system abolished and replaced with larger unitary councils.

Elections bill will bring in once-in-a-generation change to voting - but misses big opportunity

Today sees the first reading of the Representation of the People Bill, the government’s landmark legislation reforming how elections work. This promises to make some fundamental reforms to the way we vote, as well as who can cast a ballot on election day – many of which we have been campaigning on for years. The headline reform is the first expansion of the franchise in half a century, as the bill will expand the voting age in all elections to 16.

Elections are a crucial part of the democratic process. Citizens have the right to expect a regular opportunity to express a view about who should exercise power in their name, at all levels of government. That is why it is concerning that the UK government has overseen late-stage postponements of some English local council elections, in both 2025 and 2026*. In some places, including East Sussex and West Sussex, county council elections have been postponed in both years.
