The day in 1941 when a Nazi plane landed in my Cork village
Sun, 25 Dec, 2022 - 07:00 When DAVE ALLEN was a seven-year-old boy in 1941, he witnessed a remarkable sight one fine summer’s evening - a German warplane crash-landing in his village. Here, in an article that appears in this year's Holly Bough, he recalls the drama FOR millions of people across Europe during World War II, the tell-tale airplane markings of a black cross with a Nazi Swastika on the tailfin were a portent of death and destruction.
NYPS trade show floor a flurry of activity
Produce professionals from throughout the industry gathered in Manhattan for the New York Produce Show & Conference. The event offered attendees networking opportunities and educational micro-sessions. Industry members packed the Javits Center Dec. 1 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. for the one-day trade show.
In favor of a new school at Poulsbo Elementary site
Editor's note: The headline on an earlier letter from Mr. Allen, published Jan. 27, may have indicated a incorrect position on the upcoming North Kitsap School District's Prop. 1 and Prop. 2 election. We are allowing Mr. Allen this clarification. My letter regarding the purchase of a new piece of property for a new elementary school was not intended to be critical of building a new school.
North Kitsap schools can utilize assets rather than new building
Regarding the proposed North Kitsap School District levy, buying property these days is much more expensive now than it used to be. Poulsbo Elementary has quite a lot of available property on its site. The land could be better used with a new design for a new school in phases. The north parking lot has plenty of room for a new Building, possibly two story tucked into the back of the Strawberry Field. The portables could go next, with a new building section there.
David Burge and the Reader
The New York Times called him "one of America’s important pianists," and his concerts were described as "an overwhelming experience" (Washington Post). Author of Twentieth Century Piano Music, Burge was the former director of the piano department at Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. In 1993, Burge moved to San Diego with his wife, Liliane Choney, and served as composer-in-residence for the San Diego Ballet. He died in April, 2013.

All that glitters is not coal; Doncaster heavyweight Dave Allen and a century of struggle
By David Payne When popular British heavyweight Dave Allen ambles to the ring on Saturday as the unofficial headline act in a show far removed from his Doncaster home, he will, as all of us do in some shape or form, seek to step in to the spotlight and beyond the shadow cast by his forefathers and the whisper of self-doubt amplified by their deeds. Across the ring will stand the Liverpudlian giant, David Price.
Final Transmission, by Cave In
In February of 2018, the members of Cave In gathered at their rehearsal space in Boston to work on material for their next record. It had been nearly seven years since their previous album, White Silence, had been released. But they’d been writing and rehearsing methodically, off and on, to craft a worthy follow-up.

Fallbrook - 56 miles and an eternity from San Diego
When I say Fallbrook, nothing comes to mind “They are going to fix the streets? For whom? Every other shop is vacant and has been for the last few years. There’s no draw for tourists.
Mike Doyle and the formative years of San Diego surfing
For a few years back in the '60s, Mike Doyle was the hottest surfer in the world. With an unusual combination of power on big waves and stylistic grace on small waves, he became one of the sport's first professionals — meaning somebody who actually made his living from surfing. But in those days top surfers weren't handed paychecks after winning a contest, because there weren’t any sponsors.
Laura McNeal and the Reader
Laura Rhoton McNeal holds an MA in fiction writing from Syracuse University and is the author, with her husband Tom, of four young adult novels published by Knopf: Crooked (winner of the California Book Award in Juvenile Literature), Zipped (winner of the Pen Center USA Literary Award in Children’s Literature), Crushed and The Decoding of Lana Morris.
The final meltdown
Geography The final meltdown Retreating glaciers and thinning snow and ice are the future of New Zealand’s mountains. Climate change is predicted to warm the country’s atmosphere by 1–4°C by the end of the century, altering the natural water cycle—how much is frozen as snow, how much falls as rain, and how much flows in rivers. Climate researchers are seeking to predict what will change, and when. What will be the impact on hydroelectric power stations and irrigation schemes?
The fall of Horton Plaza
Pete Wilson grins at a homeless man sprawled near Horton Plaza mall, the downtown shopping center he muscled through city hall in the late 1970s. Wilson’s eyes never blink; the coattails of his tailored suit don’t flutter; his cultivated “Aw, shucks,” slightly stooped posture doesn’t change. Like the historic facade of the mall across the street, this Pete Wilson isn’t real.

That's not snow! That's hail! A storm moving through the Sacramento area dumped rain and hail over the city. Aerial views from LiveCopter 3 of the north Sacramento and Natomas area show hail-covered rooftops and roads. See the incredible sights in the video above.

"I live a perfect life,” Lester Tenney told me. “I’ve been a very fortunate man.” We were sitting in the sunshine on his patio on Mount Soledad. Betty, his wife of over 40 years, had served us coffee cake on china plates. A maid was vacuuming the rooms inside. I could hear the whack of tennis balls being hit on courts nearby. At 83, Tenney himself still plays doubles — craftily. “They call him ‘Cuisinart,’ because he slices everything,” said Betty.

Acid seas
Whenever a strong wind blew in from the sea, Lucy Tukua’s grandfather would get a trailer and head to Kaiaua to fill it up with horse mussels that had washed up on the beach. The ocean always provided enough food for him to distribute to whānau all the way up to Auckland. “Today, we don’t have those same experiences with our children,” says Tukua. We’re preparing to launch a boat from Kawakawa Bay, where the firth opens into the Hauraki Gulf, Tikapa Moana.

MAYBE, LIKE ME, ALL YOU KNOW ABOUT THE UNITED STATES POSTAL SERVICE is that stamps now cost 32 cents; a letter dropped into a blue box with an eagle on it will arrive anywhere in the country in less than a week (usually), delivered by someone in a blue uniform; and occasionally a postal worker shoots up a post office or someone finds a warehouse stuffed full of undelivered Dukakis/Bentsen campaign mail, You probably didn’t know that last year the postal service delivered 177 billion pieces of...

New Zealand’s Next Top Model
Next summer, University of Canterbury PhD student Sean Hartery is sailing south to spend six weeks aboard the research ship Tangaroa in the roughest ocean in the world. NIWA’s ship will be his home and lab in the Ross Sea, as he and fellow student Peter Kumar stand on deck and send balloons and drones up a kilometre into the air to gather data on how clouds are born.

San Diegans invite Reader writer Matthew Lickona to their homes
“[I said,] ‘You know what I do? You have to get the ickies out, otherwise, it’s going to eat you up inside and make you feel horrible.’ So she and I would be driving back from the beach, and she would say, ‘I’m going to scream, now, okay? OOOOHHH I HATE DIVORCE! AAAHHH I HATE LIVING AWAY FROM EACH OTHER!’ The next thing, we’d be laughing and just having a good time. It helped her work through things.” Rene speaks of Harvard with a touch of wonder. “The power of Harvard is absolutely immense.
San Diego in the late 1800s
William Carlson launched the first Cabrillo Day on September 28, 1892. When “Cabrillo” sailed up to Ballast Point, the local dignitaries rushed out on a creaky wharf to welcome him, crowding it until it collapsed and sent them sprawling into the mud. The public laughed at another of Billy’s schemes gone astray but elected him assemblyman anyway and was pleasantly surprised when the fledgling legislator passed the bar exam the day after his election.

When you hear the word “tiki,” what comes to mind? Try sweaty drunks, sickly sweet mai tais, and mumus; loyalty oaths, bomb shelters, and mugs molded to resemble the tiki totem of Pacific Islanders. That is, the mugs portray the deity as it was inauthentically reimagined by American popular culture in the 1950s. All are reasons to rejoice when tiki-style buildings from that era are razed. Correct? On the contrary, says local historian Alex Bevil.
Small and wild animal friends
It was sheer proximity that charmed me. His claws were as thin as embroidery floss unraveled, and he had a wisp of grass on his head, which gave him an agreeably foolish air. If he hadn’t been so terrified, I might have touched his smooth-skinned head, which was thinner than my index finger, or his oval body, barely two inches long. His tail was longer than the rest of him, and it narrowed to a fine, dusty cord. If, by some chance, you are bitten by a tarantula, or a Hairy Mygalomorph, fear not.
San Diego characters in education and book publishing
Theobald opened a correspondence with Ezra Pound that lasted for years. Throughout this time, the poet was an inmate at St. Elizabeth’s mental hospital in Washington, D.C., having been convicted of treason for radio broadcasts from Mussolini’s Italy. The correspondence consisted of practically nothing but gossip, literate though it was, but Theobald traded the letters to Laurence McGilvery of La Jolla, in exchange for the typesetting of his culminating book.
Moments in time from the Gaslamp
He used to own the Off-Broadway Theater next door, the last burlesque house on the West Coast, “I paid $5 a week rent, and I took in $10 a night. I paid the girls a dollar apiece, and put the rest in my pants pocket and took it home. Didn’t even have a safe. These days, goddamit, you need a bookkeeper to take care of your business, and the bookkeeper needs a bookkeeper.” Johnston, who is now 77 years old and has owned this place for close to 50 years, points to a picture taken in 1945.
Neighborhoods: Imperial Valley
Cesar Enriquez is the director of Casa de Amistad, a community center in Brawley that works with farm workers. “I really was a believer in what our hero, Emiliano Zapata, said: ‘The people who work the land should own the land.’ But now, what for? A guy can’t make it on a hundred and sixty acres anymore. The big growers control the markets. It’s hopeless for the small farmer.” At the first mound of harvested plants, he bends and shows me how to grab them.
Central San Diego history
The town’s demographics are altering. As older lifelong residents die, houses change hands — sometimes to younger kin; other times to younger strangers.
Famous San Diego characters
No doubt about it: Deepak Chopra has the New Age set enthralled. This is Wayne Dyerland. Past-Lives Therapyland. Verging on the spiritual turf of Linda Evans and Ramptha, her 5th-century revived adviser (the one who growls through some female guru in exchange for a thoroughbred racehorse or two). This is the land of the facile philosophical fix, infallible. Or is it? Maybe Del Mar needs Chopra as much as Calcutta needed Mother Teresa.
