Elderly man dies, hit by Jeep near Amite

Cops say a driver hit a 72-year-old man walking down the road in the middle of the night in Tangipahoa Parish. "Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L responded to a single-vehicle crash involving a pedestrian on US Highway 51 near Ponders Quarters Lane," Trooper Marc Gremillion said in a news release. "The crash ultimately claimed the life of 72-year-old Robert Baker of Amite." He says it happened at 1:20am on Friday near Amite.

Crime down 50% more in New Orleans than across the nation, the chief tells WWL

New Orleans Police Chief Anne Kirkpatrick says halfway through the year, NOPD is outpacing the national average for crime reduction. "We keep beating the national trend by almost 50% year over year," she told WWL's Newell Normand. "We are doing very, very well." Kirkpatrick credits intentional strategy, better use of technology and being proactive among the reasons. "It is many legs to the stool," the chief explained.

Big crowds in New Orleans this weekend, but still room if you want a room

The 4th of July weekend is bringing a lot of people to New Orleans. "The Essence Festival and July 4th holiday weekend are expected to drive strong hotel occupancy across New Orleans, with demand supported by major events, holiday travel and meetings and conventions taking place in the city," New Orleans & Company said in a news release. They say, however, there is still room for those who want to make a last minute booking. Hotels are forecast to be more than 80% full Friday and Saturday nights.
