1 Introduction Alerted by a flurry of blog posts suggesting the scholarly system was in danger of collapse as, for example, evidenced by fake science growing faster than real science and the widespread presence of fake reviewers/editors and networks of brokers connecting paper-mills up with authors and publishers to place papers in journals with ‘friendly editors’ (notably, Nova 2025) we decided to determine whether there is robust evidence to support these claims.

ECRs are very aware of existing levels of research misconduct and low-grade practices, putting the main blame for this on the speed with which researchers are encouraged to publish as many papers as possible. The widespread availability of questionable, predatory or grey journals is also seen as a contributory factor. AI is believed to make matters much worse. The genie has come out of the bottle and the remedy must be a change in the reputational system, rather than greater prescription.
