Himito: a graph-based toolkit for mitochondrial genome analysis using long reads
Abstract Understanding the genetic and epigenetic regulation of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) is essential for elucidating mechanisms of aging and disease. Long-read sequencing can span the mitochondrial genome and capture base-modification signals, yet analytical tools remain limited. We developed Himito, a graph-based toolkit for analyzing mitochondrial genome using long reads.

Why counting women is not enough: from inclusion to equity in oncology trials
Efforts to improve equity for women in oncology drug development have thus far focused on representation in clinical trials. However, it is now time to take the next step: ensuring trials capture outcomes that matter for women. Incorporating sex-specific analyses and biological variables can reveal differences in efficacy and toxicity and advance equitable care.

What is the Normal Lap Length for Reinforcement Bars?
The normal lap length for reinforcement bars — also known as the lap splice length — depends on the bar diameter, grade of concrete, grade of steel, and whether the bar is in tension or compression. However, as a general rule followed on most construction sites around the world: • For Tension (in beams, slabs, etc.): • Lap joints must be staggered and not located at high-stress zones such as mid-spans of beams or near column-beam joints.
What is the most cost-effective way to balance sustainability and structural integrity in modern construction projects?
Balancing sustainability with structural integrity begins with integrated design thinking — where architects, engineers, and builders collaborate from day one. One of the most cost-effective strategies is the use of high-performance materials such as engineered timber, recycled steel, and geopolymer concrete. These not only reduce environmental impact but also deliver strength and longevity.
The Power Of Long Walks (10,000 Steps A Day Changed My Life)
Let me tell you something unexpected: walking changed everything. Not because I was falling apart — but because I didn’t realize how alive I could feel until I started putting one foot in front of the other… over and over… 10,000 times a day. At first, it was just about getting some fresh air. A break from the screens. An excuse to listen to my favorite playlists and podcasts. But then… something subtle started to shift. My mornings stopped feeling like a slow crawl into consciousness.

PERSPECTIVES ON CANCER: What Films Get Wrong About Cancer - And Why It Matters
There are more cancer types than there are organ systems, but, according to Hollywood, there is essentially just “Cancer.” Capital C. Period. Cancer-inflicted characters on the silver screen also primarily face just one outcome: death. This usually follows a montage of chemotherapy treatments that leave movie stars bald and purple under the eyes. There is no targeted immunotherapy in Hollywood. No clinical trials. No genomic medicine.

The loneliness often felt more profound when surrounded by people.

We Don't Need More Modules. We Need Time Off
I read two articles recently that shook me. Diversifying editorial boards to mitigate the global burden of genitourinary cancers - Nature Reviews Urology

ICJ genocide case - a slam dunk for Israel
“A tale … full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.” (William Shakespeare) Even before South Africa’s lawyers took the podium at The Hague to argue that Israel was committing genocide in Gaza, it was clear that their case was a non-starter. Unsurprisingly, therefore, their oral submissions to the court provided a textbook illustration of the legal term “no case to answer”, denoting a situation where the charges made are so obviously without merit, they require no response.
