Opinion | Debates and dialogue must begin with honesty and respect
As we look ahead to the Nov. 5 general election, the business, labor, and government representatives of the Metropolitan Affairs Coalition (MAC) are endorsing the plan to hold three debates between candidates for Michigan’s open U.S. Senate seat. This plan has been put forth by the Michigan Debate Task Force. These debates are an opportunity to set a different tone for Michigan politics, and we encourage each candidate to take this opportunity and responsibility seriously.
I spent 22 years as AFT union leader. Here's what the future of labor must be. | Opinion
David Hecker Detroit Free Press I have served as president of the American Federation of Teachers Michigan for 22 years. I've spent 40 years as part of, and working for, the Michigan labor movement, with another six years as a local union leader in Wisconsin. As I take a step back after decades of leadership, I offer that we are in a period of labor resurgence that unions must take full advantage of.
David Hecker: Michigan students deserve to learn in a healthy environment
As educators and advocates for public schools, we believe in empowering our students with the knowledge and skills they’ll need to succeed and thrive later in life — but we also recognize our responsibility to provide a stable future for young people doesn’t end there. As the chair of the union-led Michigan Green and Health Schools Coalition, I am working alongside my colleagues to make our schools greener and healthier now and for the future.
David Hecker: Public sector workers deserve more protections in Michigan Original
A great deal has already been accomplished this legislative session. Democrats, who have majorities in both the Michigan House and Michigan Senate for the first time in 40 years, have joined with Gov. Gretchen Whitmer to drive large policy changes. This sea change in leadership was accomplished last November, in large part thanks to the work of organized labor. But much more needs to be done.
David Hecker: Don’t fall for well-funded, divide-and-conquer tactics
by David Hecker, Michigan Advance March 29, 2023 Throughout history and across continents, wealth and power have often been concentrated in the hands of just a few people and organizations. That’s while the rest are left to contend for scraps, and the United States is no different.
Students should be taught the truth about Rosa Parks and other civil rights leaders | Opinion Original
On Feb. 4, which would have been Ms. Parks 110th birthday, I was privileged to attend the premier showing of “The Rebellious Life of Mrs. Rosa Parks” at the Detroit Institute of Arts, an event co-sponsored by my national union, the AFT. The documentary by journalist Soledad O’Brien was based on the book by AFT member Jeanne Theoharis. The documentary is spectacular, bringing the intelligence, commitment and courage of Rosa Parks to life. It should be a part of our schools’ curricula.
David Hecker: Students should be taught the truth about Rosa Parks and other civil rights leaders
by David Hecker, Michigan Advance February 23, 2023 The myth: Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a Montgomery bus to a white man because she was physically tired. The truth: As Advance readers know, the truth is that Rosa Parks was not physically tired, but was tired of the humiliation, the second-class status; that Rosa Parks was an activist, the Secretary of the Montgomery NAACP.
David Hecker: What does Damar Hamlin have to do with worker safety? More than you think.
When Buffalo Bills player Damar Hamlin suffered cardiac arrest on the football field a few weeks ago, fans and fellow players alike looked on in horror — while NFL officials were ready to get back to business. The coaches of both the Bills and their opponents, the Cincinnati Bengals, insisted on postponing the game, but before that, they were instructed that play would resume after a five-minute warmup period.
David Hecker: We need to work together to protect the health of kids and workers this winter ⋆ Michigan Advance
by David Hecker, Michigan Advance December 20, 2022 Cold and flu season is here — and this year, respiratory viruses are running rampant among children in Michigan and across the country. With COVID still a factor and RSV and influenza on the rise, we’re seeing alarming rates of these illnesses in our kids, resulting in overcrowded hospitals and difficulty getting treatment.
David Hecker: After the election, let’s celebrate, analyze and build a better Michigan
Last week’s election results were astounding. For the first time in my 39 years in Michigan, stalwart allies of public education and working people are the majority in both the Michigan Senate and House and Gretchen Whitmer will be our governor for four more years.
David Hecker: How you can make your voice heard this election
by David Hecker, Michigan Advance October 19, 2022 We hear it every time there’s an election year: Get out and vote to effect change in your communities. And it’s true; voting is one of the most important tools we have to put our political values into practice. You can bet I’ll be casting a ballot this November — but voting is just one of many tools available to us, and just voting is not enough.
David Hecker: We can debate issues, but public education shouldn’t be a political war zone Original
by David Hecker, Michigan Advance September 19, 2022 As a union representing educators, we have a vested interest in public policy, and therefore politics. And as a union, AFT Michigan has received our fair share of criticism from people who believe politics do not belong in education. At best, the claims that we should keep education and politics separate are somewhat misguided.
David Hecker: Health care is a human right. That’s why we support reproductive rights.
by David Hecker, Michigan Advance August 17, 2022 Our labor movement is all about fighting for all workers and all U.S. residents to be treated with respect and dignity and to enjoy equal rights and equal protections. We also have a long history of fighting for affordable, quality health care, be it at the bargaining table or advocating for state and national legislation. Our labor movement believes that access to affordable, quality health care is a human right.

David Hecker: Corporations should stop funding politicians who back voter suppression
Sometimes it is hard to live our values. We try hard to do so, and I for one, know that at times I falter. But while slipping at times is understandable, there are lines we must strive never to cross. Voting rights is not a complicated issue. It’s a question of fundamental values — justice, equality, freedom — that we all have an obligation to support.

David Hecker: We must fight back against attacks on LGBTQ+ kids and adults
Right now, I am worried. Like many others in Michigan and across the country, I’ve seen the onslaught of homophobic and transphobic attacks coming at LGBTQ+ kids and adults from all angles, and I know the impact this kind of bigotry can have on people who are already marginalized. In just the past few weeks in Michigan, we’ve seen former state Rep.
David Hecker: We must fight back against the DeVos education agenda
Michiganders have known for a long time that the DeVos family is a threat to public education. Over the years, Betsy DeVos has been extremely active in the conservative movement to undermine public education and funnel taxpayer dollars into non-public schools, including her track record as former President Trump’s secretary of Education advancing this reckless agenda.

David Hecker: Here’s how we can improve our classrooms and our climate
Educators and schools play a critical role in preparing our kids for the future and giving them the skills they’ll need to thrive. But education doesn’t happen in a vacuum, and our students’ future will be shaped by more than what they learn from their textbooks. Right now, the climate crisis is one of the biggest threats to public health, and we cannot ignore the impact it has on our communities.

David Hecker: Student teachers deserve to be paid for their work
Many of us have fond memories of student teachers from our time in K-12 education. These students and aspiring educators joined our classrooms — and for several months, did the work of a full-time teacher, from planning lessons to managing the class on a day to day basis. But what many students who have spent time learning from student teachers may not know is that those student teachers were not paid for their work.
David Hecker: Schools need a comprehensive approach to gun violence prevention
Last month, a community right here in Michigan was devastated by a mass shooting that took place at a school. I wish I could say the Oxford High School shooting was an isolated incident, but as we’ve all observed over the past two decades, school shootings have become an all-too-common occurrence. We cannot bring back those whose lives have been taken — from Columbine to Sandy Hook to Oxford.
David Hecker: Public money should go to public schools
For decades, the DeVos family and their ilk have crusaded to undermine public schools and funnel money into private schools, and unfortunately, they’re back at it again.
Empower paraprofessionals to address Michigan's teacher shortage ⋆ Michigan Advance
It’s no secret that school districts across Michigan are struggling with a teacher shortage—and both teachers and students are struggling as a result. Without adequate staff, schools are forced to resort to larger class sizes, increasing teachers’ workloads and making it more difficult for students to get the individualized attention they need to succeed.
David Hecker: Anti-worker policies from the Snyder era are holding Michigan back
Labor Day is a time to reflect on the hard-fought victories unions have won for all working people and consider our path forward as we continue our work to defend and uplift workers everywhere. Usually, union members would be marching together down Michigan Avenue today — but while COVID prevents us from gathering for a parade this year, we’re still just as determined to ensure working people’s voices are heard on Labor Day and year-round.
David Hecker: Rural and urban kids face many of the same challenges
If you’re just passing through them, it may not look like rural and urban, including many surrounding suburbs, communities have much in common — and elected officials often pit urban and rural communities against each other in public policy fights. However, they actually have more in common than some would like us to believe, including a shared belief in the importance of educating our children.
Dems concerned about ‘chilling effect’ for schools with ‘critical race theory’-style ban
Following a nationwide trend of right-wing furor over how racism is taught in schools, lawmakers on the Michigan House Education Committee on Tuesday traded barbs about race and identity while debating a GOP bill. The legislation is similar to bills introduced by Republicans in several other states that ban “critical race theory” from being taught in schools, although the Michigan version doesn’t mention CRT by name.

David Hecker: Conservative myths about critical race theory hurt students and teachers
As educators, we believe in teaching kids the truth about our history and society, even when the truth is not pleasant. But some people across the country are working to infringe on teachers’ right and responsibility to be honest with their students about the history or racism, past and present, in our nation. In keeping with a long tradition of fearmongering around public education, these conservative leaders have chosen a new concept to unfairly vilify: critical race theory (CRT).
David Hecker: We’ve made strides in school funding, but more must be done
A few weeks ago, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed a bipartisan School Aid budget bill, the largest in history, that takes important steps toward fully funding our pre-K-12 public schools. As I remarked at the governor’s press conference, this is what happens when Democrats and Republicans come together in support of our children. As it stands, Michigan’s outdated system distributes a foundation allowance per student in a manner that treats districts differently.

We can do better than 'back to normal' for Michigan schools
As vaccines are distributed and we get more shots in arms, people in Michigan and across the country are looking forward to getting things “back to normal,” but when it comes to public education, we can and should do much better than that. While COVID has exposed and worsened problems in our school system, our state’s approach to public education has been unacceptable for longer than the past year.

Opinion | Whitmer’s school reopening plan puts student, teacher safety first
When considering how to safely bring students and school staff back into school buildings, it is critical to acknowledge that the coronavirus is very much still present in our state.
Marginalized communities are hurt most by COVID-19|Viewpoint
David Hecker, guest writer Published 4:38 p.m. ET June 17, 2020 | Updated 8:08 a.m. ET June 18, 2020 During the meetings I’ve been in as the state has dealt with the fallout of COVID-19, consistent, common themes arise including the devastating effects this crisis has on hourly employees who struggle to make ends meet; the disproportionate impact the virus has had on African American communities; and the digital divide our students face.
Opinion: Michigan students and educators united in fight against coronavirus, despite intimidation
68 Protesters congregate at Michigan Capitol in rally against stay-home order By Mia Moberly and David Hecker There is hardly a community or family in America that hasn’t in some way been impacted by the coronavirus crisis. We are all hurting to get back to normal. We’ve lost loved ones who we couldn’t see in their final hours. Over 30 million people have lost jobs that pay for rent, mortgages, tuition, and medical bills. Educators and students have been hit hard too.
