Days have passed since I rolled the credits of The Incident at Galley House, yet I still haven’t shaken its final moments. As I sat there, my Steam Deck running hot at 2 a.m. on a late Saturday turned early Sunday, I felt a sharp pang of emotion. Part of it was fatigue after the marathon of hours logged; part of it was relief at this winding journey having reached its conclusion.

We’ve seen a dizzying number of great roguelikes in recent years. From escaping (or breaking back into) the depths of hell, to traversing a labyrinthine manor, to assembling killer hands in poker, these experiences have been wildly complex and endlessly creative. Roguelikes get a bad rap for being formulaic, but that generalization belies the genre’s true, inner beauty.
