Down to the waterline: Yaluk Langa at Heide museum

Can a single tree be more important than a whole art museum? The Heide Museum of Modern Art is a public museum and sculpture park that incorporates and extends the home and collection of John and Sunday Reed, patrons who fostered Victoria’s modern art movement. Within the museum’s grounds is a huge gnarled red gum tree named Yingabeal that predates the nearby buildings by at least 250 years.

I vividly recall my first impression of the D House (2000, Donovan Hill). This was in 2012, when Timothy Hill was residing there as a tenant of his client and close friend Geraldine Cleary. The house has no front door, so visitors walk along a path that runs the length of the street facade, catching glimpses of the living space within, before passing through a wooden gatehouse and into a garden courtyard.

In December 2020, during the final days of his first presidential term, Donald Trump signed an executive order “promoting beautiful federal civic architecture” and stipulating that neoclassicism should be reinstated as the “preferred and default” for federal buildings. While sweeping in its scope, Trump’s edict was also strangely specific. It took special exception to the “massive and block-like appearance” of late 20th century brutalist architecture.
